Gal / Sys Maps keep reopening after closing them

Hi, dunno where to post this so here we are...

Often when I exit galaxy or system map, they automatically reopen. After that every exit attempt triggers it to reopen again.

It seems I have to manually use the mouse to click exit on the map, and maybe alt-tab away from the game to fix it. But it eventually reoccurs...

Anybody else having this issue?

I've returned from years away and ofc have bugs to sweep out of my keybinds for all the updates. On my X52 I use a 2-button combo to exit any UI menus (uiback), including the gal / sys map screens. But now it seems it doesn't work, or somehow triggers this issue. (Edit: to clarify, that button combo works fine to exit all UI screens except for the sys and gal maps, which don't work now for some reason.)

If instead I use the same button that I opened the map with, I have to tap it twice for it to exit the map screen.

A separate issue I found is my joy button bind for HUD toggle (ctrl-alt-G) now also triggers the next target command (which is G). So I had to unbind G from anything to avoid the conflict.

Sometimes I try to use esc to close maps and it backs out but then hiccups a bunch as thr game things I want to go to the menu, it's annoying but whatevs.
 
I'd be happy now just knowing how to bind something to exit the gal sys maps cleanly. It used to be "UI Back" but apparently that doesn't work anymore. And the bind that opens the map needs to be double-tapped to exit it.

Strange I have the keys that open both maps set to exit the maps as well and a single click works every time.
I am not sure if UI Back ever worked for me.

Those binds have remained the same since I started.

I don’t recall ever having the maps reopen by themselves.

That's good news to hear that it can exit the maps with single click/press. I just need to figure out why mine's not working... I might rebuild my binds file from scratch from a new 4.0+ default template. Mine's evolved over a decade lol so maybe it's got some legacy stuff to be flushed. Also I vaguely recall Elite sometimes thinks ppl have "international" keyboards with different characters when we don't (I found a couple strange keybinds in mine like É for one of the maps).

UI Back definitely exited the maps for me in the past, at least in the 3.x and earlier era. Maybe Odyssey / 4.x changed things. There's def a lot more stuff on the map screens now, and it does seem like UI Back sometimes closes map sub-menus (filters, info boxes, etc) instead of completely exiting the map screen.
 
This may sound dumb, i'm in a hurry and didnt have time to read everything... Sticky buttons? like they're worn out or dirty?
Actually that's really smart, good idea! So I switched the open/close maps functions to a different set of HOTAS buttons and the map exit works perfectly. 🤔 The original buttons are long-travel toggle buttons and I think easy crud collectors (the big spring-loaded T1 to T6 toggle buttons on the X52 Pro joystick base, for anyone curious who has one). I've confirmed they're working okay but I likely wasn't moving them far enough to trigger the switch cleanly each time (especially if they're a bit dirty), making me think the map screens needed double-presses to exit. I switched back to those buttons again and it seems to be working okay now.

I also confirmed that UI Back definitely doesn't exit the map screens anymore, at least not on the first press. If any sub-menus/boxes are open/selected (which is pretty much always the case), then each UI Back leaves them one by one, until finally it'll exit the map screen. So it might take like UI Back clicks to exit. (Also I think the game's switch debounce logic on that screen might be a bit finicky so it's falsely sensing an extra click and re-opening the map.) Anyhow earlier game versions had much simpler map screens where UI Back exited easily, so I just need to re-train myself to use the "map open" buttons to close them instead.

Semi-related, I went thru my binds (and compared to old files from previous game versions) and I found some bind conflicts introduced by game updates that I think are sorted out now. Plus also some issues Elite has with mixing up Windows keyboard layouts vs language settings. Things seem to be working okay now (I hope!) 🤞
 
Nice, sounds like you're on the right track. If you're feeling adventurous, have some patients and some small tools, like eye glass screw drivers, taken them apart and see if they're cruddy. Alcohol, the rubbing type (lol), and a pencil eraser are good for cleaning contacts, a clean rag and a blow gun (your mouth (lol again)) can get into those inaccessible places.

When you're finished I could use some help on an ignition system that someone in the past has kindly butchered all up, none of the wires are the right colors, some bypassed and some tied together where there should be components between them, 1 cylinder firing perfectly, and 3 cylinders that have no spark at all on a CD (capacitor discharge) ignition system. And yup i did clean the ignition switch (key switch) and lanyard kill switch (idiot switch) before going to the more complicated (expensive) tests for the trigger assembly. If someone followed that jargon, i did notice brand new modules and coils, wired properly. Uggh some days are much better than others.
