Galactic FSD?

Are we ever getting a 'galactic hyperdrive' in Elite Dangerous?

Would be cool to expand to Andromeda for example and begin from scratch, especially with colonisation in play now. Let players expand and own the galaxy for themselves.

One-way trip with a modified Fleet Carrier...put the dangerous back in Elite Dangerous...

Then they can put a second galaxy in the game to jump to you mean?
In theory, we could have more galaxies than one. The Lesser and Greater Magellanic Clouds are likely the best candidates. While smaller than the Milky Way, there's still billions and billions of solar system to explore.

You do know how the system works right? They don't have billions and billions more ID's to give out for other galaxies. You can't have more galaxies than one unless you unload one galaxy entirely from memory and reload a second one, requiring double the resources at FDEV to support them. We are limited by the number of ID's available in a 64bit number for every star system, planet, moon, station and other stellar object in the entire galaxy.

That's why it's a one-way trip, and essentially a new game in a different galaxy.

I also had this theory that the Thargoids originated from Andromeda, they were an extremist and aggressive sect of another species that were banished to the Milky Way aeons ago...

Things might not be static over time. Considering an unsigned 64-bit integer has a maximum value of 18,446,744,073,709,551,615, there's room for quite a few more billion entries. We can speculate all we want, but what FDev will do, if they will do anything related to this, is something only they know.

You are ignoring the point that having another galaxy require FDEV to provide twice the support and ongoing costs they already do, for the same number of players. Essentially the way you are wording it means it's an entirely separate game that would split the player base in two, require twice the costs and support structure, but provide no extra ongoing income stream, a quick way to bankruptcy right?

Do some research, the 64bit integer ID's aren't just handed out randomly, there are assigned and reserved address spaces for Star systems and planets/moons. It's not something only FDEV know, they literally told us in tech documents and videos exactly how the system works to generate the galaxy and planets/moons.
