During my recent trip to Beagle Point via the Sagittarius-Carina arm (this was independent of the ongoing Sagitarrius-Carina mission that I hadn't really paid much attention, or realise was a trip taking the same route when I originally set off) I found out how useful the 3D map in EDDiscovery could be.... particularly now that it include the new regions for the community mapping project. However, whilst using this, I started noticing the number of regions where people had travelled using very deliberate routes in order to make patterns, or text in the stars. At first, I thought this was a little cheesy. However, after a trip of this length; eventually the space madness set in and I fancied having a go myself.
I noticed that on the map that the Nyauthai Ripple appeared rather untouched, so I thought it would make a nice canvass for my astronomical artwork. Unfortunately, when I arrived at what I thought to be the ripple, I was still about a kylie from where it was marked on the map. I still think there's an error there, that I will bring up in the EDDiscovery thread at some point, but for now I decided to make use of the region as it currently looks and head to the coordinate of where it starts on the map.
I never really thought to document it as a work in progress, but I have taken some screenshots of how it looks now, before such a point in the future where it might not be easily visible on the map anymore (or the outline of the region on the map is moved).
Because of the size, and star density, this is not as consistant at all 3d angles, only really from above. Also, I made some minor mistakes along the way, and not all of the curves are how I'd like...
Anyway - here it is:
1. With region markers, but not region colouring
2. Without region markers
3. How it would look to someone else looking at this part of the map without region markers
4. Somthing I didn't really have in mind when I started, but how it looks on the EDSM map
Well, for now, the madness has subsided and I'm heading directly to Jaques for a proper drink. I do not, however, promise never to do something like this in the future... and what the patter means... no idea
EDIT: I'd also like to know what inspired others on this front, and if anyone else has done something similar, but not shared it to EDSM. And BTW, my personal favourite is the the really great bubbles that were drawn around the PRAEI regions. Whoever that was, nice work.
