Galactic Hyperspace - as in 1984 Elite. Probably been suggested before, but if we should run out of galaxy in the Milky Way, this is an (hopefully) easy way to make new attractive territory available for all players. The Magellanic Clouds could be separate galaxies, the Andromeda Galaxy is another suggestion.

In the context of Elite, FE2 and ED, I think we can take the original "galaxy" to be a group of 256 systems within the Milky Way. Each Galactic Hyperspace jump took you to a different set of 256 systems.
All 8 sets comprised a circuit of known space in the original Elite.
What we have as everyday FSD in ED would sit roughly where Galactic Hyperspace was back in the day of Cmdr Jameson.
