Horizons Galactic routes not determent well ?

Sometimes a first jump is a bit to far for my ship. No problem, I change to economic routes and off we go.
After one jump I try fastest route and most of the time I can fly the rest of the route using fast route.

But something strange happens everytime in this situation, when I come back from that mission to the same starting point I can go all the way back to my starting system with fast routes.
And that is strange because the computer could't find a fast route when I left. But when I return it uses always the fastest routes.
It is a minor " problem" but I just wondered if this is a bug, bad coding, lousy routegenerator (where can I get a good one? ) or do I miss an important thing in the way the computer works with route finding.

I believe it is something to do with how much fuel you have, which is weight, which affects your jump? There are clever monkeys here who know more about this, they will be along shortly.

I think you are correct. As you use fuel jump ranges get longer. I don't think the course plotting part of the navigation system figures the dropping fuel weight when it plans out a multiple jump course.

How much fuel and cargo you have will affect your jump range.

Early on there was an "add 10% fuel" button so that you could keep your tank low and only add a bit to do the next jump.

You need to plot your routes after taking on cargo and fuel. Additionally, make sure you are not manually resetting the load slider in the navigation tab of the galaxy map. Thje plot can only be made while the map is open, so any changes to your range while the map is closed are not taken into consideration.

I've never had refuelling block a jump, so I'd rather think that plotting always assumes a full tank.

Ah yes, of course. Stupid I didn't think of that. The last jump is never with a full fueltank.
Thanks for your answers. Back to flying again.

something I have seen with my Diamondback explorer, is when you have routing on fastest, and you have ample fuel on the basis of your destination, that if you let it route you on the basis of 0t cargo (you have no cargo anyway) it will zig-zag you to your destination and show you running out of fuel 1 jump short of your destination, but if you move the cargo mass slider adding increments of 1t of cargo (even though you have none) it will recalculate the route, sometimes I have to add 14t to 18t of none existent mass, so the route is significantly less zig-zag in nature and thus much straighter, sometimes it has 1 less jump, and it also shows you make it to the destination without extra fuel.

so adding cargo via the slider when it calculates the route can make it a more direct route with fewer jumps and ample fuel, when it would otherwise indicate you don't have enough fuel, have 1 extra jump travailing via a much more zig-zag route if you left it at 0t cargo.

an example of the above.

I am at HIP 17692, I want to travel to BD+49 1280, a distance of 321.27LY, my DBE has a currant jump range with 32t of fuel and no cargo of 41.37LY.

if I do the fastest route with 0t cargo, it calculates 9 jumps and that I run out of fuel 3 jumps from my destination (or 236.61LY from my starting point), if I route the fastest route with 22t of cargo then I run out of fuel just 1 jump away from my destination (or 291.37LY from my starting point), granted in this instant its still 9 jumps, but with fuel load decreasing I could probably do the full 9 jumps without refuelling with the latter or alternatively using a fuel scoop just for a couple of seconds as I manoeuvre to my next jump at each star i.e. NOT going out of my way to refuel.
