A nice idea that would give corporations a bigger role might be a galactic stockmarket where all corporations are listed. Dependant on what industry they are they may also have corporate rivalries and wars that the players could affect along with their stockprices. Even slightly affecting the galactic price and demand of certain trade goods particularly in their spheres of influence.

Personally, I would find keeping up with something like this a little over my head. I'd rather work with a simpler, abstracted version.
Would be cool if missions spawned off of things like this as well. Aren't there sub-factions that have a corporate government system?

I myself would probably never trade on the stock market, because I can't wrap my head around it, but it would be very cool if it where an option (and if it would affect the prices, like a different layer of the background sim)
