Today there are so many beautiful photographs or drawings of the galaxy.
Are invited to share in this thread is not only beautiful, but also instructive materials that illustrate the huge world in which we live.

I like this one

Get an idea of the scale of the universe, from the smallest to the largest:

http://htwins.net/scale2/

That is not entirely accurate and I'm sure i've seen one of those that was a bit more accurate than that. The main example I can think of is that as your scrolling out you see the distance to alpha centauri and scroll out some more and a light year pops up followed by the oort cloud.

Now I'm pretty sure that alpha centauri is not inside the oort cloud and less than a light year from us (it is infact 4.5 light years away). That being said it does give a rough idea of the scale.

Just looked up the other one of these i've seen and it was the prequel to this. If you delete the number 2 out of the link it'll load the original which I think is more accurate in the scale but the pictures arent as nice.

Mind = Blown

I watched the late, great Sir Patrick Moore on an episode of The Sky at Night, where he did something similar: comparing the size/mass of our own sun to those outer lying stars. It was utterly mind-boggling to comprehend then, and still is now :S

Explanation: Many wonders are visible when flying over the Earth at night. A compilation of such visual spectacles was captured recently from the International Space Station (ISS) and set to rousing music. Passing below are white clouds, orange city lights, lightning flashes in thunderstorms, and dark blue seas. On the horizon is the golden haze of Earth's thin atmosphere, frequently decorated by dancing auroras as the video progresses. The green parts of auroras typically remain below the space station, but the station flies right through the red and purple auroral peaks. Solar panels of the ISS are seen around the frame edges. The ominous wave of approaching brightness at the end of each sequence is just the dawn of the sunlit half of Earth, a dawn that occurs every 90 minutes.
