Newcomer / Intro Galaxy Map help

I am having a hard time selecting some systems in the galaxy map.
I can select some systems (the once that have the blue dot next to them),
but most of the systems that I need (like the once with the mission objective icon over it) don't have blue dot next to it, so the only way I am able to select them is by doing a search by name.
I am using a PC with Xbox controller and Hotas setup, I have tried all of the interface devices (mouse, gameplad and joystick) without any luck, also tried doing it in 2D and Oculus.
I must be doing something wrong, but can't figure out what it is.
Any help is appreciated.

Do you have the filters turned on in the third? panel of your g map? On my g map the stars are all white when there are no filters on.

I'm with lone - I think that you simply have some stars filtered out.
Either switch to the realistic, like Strontium Dog said, or if you are moving around the bubble, I recommend switching the filter in the 3rd tab into Economy and tick ALL the boxes. That way you'll see all the inhabited systems.

Have a look at the tabs on top of the LHS, select the one with stars (4th from left) - go to MAP - look at "filters" and "show by colour" and make sure all the options are selected and whether you want allegiance, economy or whatever.

Also at the top, on the right-hand tab - if you have show grid selected then all the blue dots mark where star's drop-down or drop-up lines intersect the grid plane. I have grid turned off to make the map less messy.

Select the 'stars' tab on the top-left (after the 'Bookmarks' tab) and then you have the option of 'Realistic', 'Map' or 'Powerplay':
