Galaxy Map in VR

Anyone have a solution for using the galaxy map and even the System map in VR? Currently I have it mapped to my HOTAS and it's a real pain.

I've seen some people who use Voice Attack to control their galaxy map.

I found this but it's from 2014

The simple solution is to pitch your view so you can see the selection grid, the circle with arrows always stays in the middle of the grid, if you can't see the grid, your doin it wrong. Then translate up, down, left, right, forward, back to point the selection circle to the star you want and select it.

The map managing in VR mode is horrible, slow and pain. I want use my mouse but it's impossible to select the star over the mouse pointer O_+'

I have a game pad for driving the SRV, I've bound that for Galaxy Map control as well, makes for a very easy and simple setup, since the map is much more easily and reliably controllable with a pad than a HOTAS, imho.

Would you elaborate on your bindings? As a new player I'm finding it nearly impossible to navigate the
galaxy and System maps in VR and this is killing the game for me.

I just bound them to my Hotas.

Just identify what control does what and ask yourself which button you want to push and is it available
Then you try the bindings out, change them and try again.

Eventually you end up with something you just get used to, then muscle memory sets in and you couldn't change the bindings if you wanted to.

A 3d connexion would be great but that is a $300. Bit much if can't expensive it.

I use a 3dConnexion controller - ideal for the job.
Which version?

I've got a number of controls bound to my HOTAS, but I'm still having trouble selecting things. I can't select a planet in the System map if it doesn't have a landing spot, and the selection pop-up flickers in and out madly. Right now I have to exit the game and go to the desktop to have a hope of finding a port to buy something at.

Yeah I struggled with that too I then had a facepalm moment when I realised you can't select the star with the Hotas directly as with the mouse on a screen.

You have to place the marker on the dots on the grid, you have to be pretty well zoomed in to get there and there is definitely a trick to it, took me about three days to get OK with it.
And it is far faaar from as easy as with a mouse on a regular screen.

It really need a rethink but it is doable.

System hasn't given me as much problems, but then again I don't really use the system map much.
Well as little as possible and then some :p

Why do people insist on using a 2 dimensional device in a 3 dimensional space? A mouse is counter intuitive, you need to be able to move on three axes, up/down left/right and back/forward. This is impossible with a mouse. Interestingly, the mouse cursor in ED is not a 3 dimensional object either, so it is impossible to tell where it is relative to the object you want to select.

I use an xbox controller just for the galaxy and system map. It's perfect for it. rotations are on the two analog sticks, and the shoulder pads are for zoom in/out and up/down.
Now... if Frontier added a virtual keyboard for the search box that would be great!

On my X52 Pro -
Stick twist is to rotate the map.
Pitch changes the pitch. Yaw does nothing.
One of the throttle hats is used for the flat plain.
One of the hats on the stick is used for the vertical movement.
Scroll wheel on the throttle zooms.
Stick hat for menu navigation.
Fire button to select.

I have no problems with galaxy or system map other than the movement in system map being much slower in VR than when I'm using a screen. I suppose star selection is a little more tricky, but you get used to it with practice.

Brilliant :)

I've basically gone back to playing in normal mode as whilst I have got the CV1 working, I'm on my way to SAG A* and cannot even select a star when using the CV1, which is problematic when you're trying to travel 23.000 Ly's
.
This is just what I have been hoping to find :)

I already started practising to navigate in the galaxy map with my Hotas before I got my Vive.
Now it's a natural thing for me, very easy, up and down an round and round I go :)

I'm also making full use of the possibility's Frontier gives us e.g. the Galaxy-map button
in the Mission screen and the way-points (bookmarks)

The only thing is that I also want a keyboard and a panel to reach my desktop to reach
the inter.. eh sorry.. galaxynet.

Very good point Dree! It's so much easier to make the switch to VR when you already have a good understanding of the game and your buttons mapped, in my opinion that's without a doubt the best way to try VR for the first time, the transition is almost perfect.

Shucks I'm' truly sorry to hear that , I was really hoping for a magic pill to fix all this when I joined these forums and considering that you are a moderator here that tells me this might not be that easy. I'm' just curious though if there is a possible fix in the making as we speak? It seems some folks are doing just fine which gives me hope but This also concerns me that this might be all we get for a Galaxy map fix. best case scenario i am hoping to look back at my noob statements and say sorry for the misunderstanding.
