Galaxy map in VR

Hi

It's ironic - I bought a Rift to enhance my experience with ED yet it has ended up killing the game for me. I don't want to play it on the monitor any more, and I really can't be dealing with switching between VR and the monitor when wanting to navigate quickly in the galaxy map.

So I bought the Rift in August and have not played ED since.

I think I've read what there is to read around navigating the map in VR - using the grid seems to be the best approach. But it's so fiddly compared with the monitor, I want to be able to click on a system to select it and use eye tracking to do that rather than steer a cursor with the keyboard.

Did I miss something? Has this been improved or is there a better way?

I use a gamepad (Xbox controller) for VR and galaxy map is no problem at all - gamepad does everything easily except typing in a system name (still need to use the keyboard to do that).

There hasnt been any major changes.
but it is allowed to try and think out of the box.

I NEVER take the hmd off now unless for exigent circumstances and it took me about four days worth of gaming time to adapt to using the map in vr, another two to become proficient and that was before we had bookmarks.

Map your buttons, use the grid markers and don't try to select stars directly.

It is that simple.

When I use the galmap in 3D with m&k, I usually just close one eye.
It’s manual 2D. ;)

Must close the correct eye for the mouse pointer to work though.

I find navigating the galaxy via HOTAS quite comfortable. The only thing i don´t like, is the side menu being at an uncomfortable angle.
If i could change two things, i would turn the menu a bit towards the viewer and add a virtual keyboard.

Given how many people seem to have trouble with the maps in 3D, I'm surprised that FD hasn't added a 2D map option. That's what I use with my 3D monitor and NVidia LCD shutter glasses. There's a button on the IR emitter that toggles 2D/3D, which I use a lot.

But the real pain is... typing in system names... simply ridiculous that there's still no virtual keyboard ingame or something like that ! It can't be that much of rocket science to get one implemented...

I'd just love to see a right click mouse option to paste into the system name box on the gal map. I have to take off my headset and ctrl V. Snore.

I have found ways to use the gal map effectively with xb controller and HOTAS, I just map the motion to the same axis as flying round the place, with added zoom.

It's possible, but a little clunky.

Why take off your hmd to hit ctrl+v? Just put some blue tac markers on the keys and youll find em easy without looking if you cant without otherwise.

Or make a macro bound to something on your hotas.

Even when trying to select a particular system deep in the core? (e.g. a system with a friend marker on it or maybe something like trying to manually select Sagittarius A*).

Try it and let me know (I'm genuinely interested to learn if I'm still missing a trick with this).

I must say that although I pretty fluent at navigating the galaxy my with a HOTAS I can still pick something like Sag A* using the mouse WAY faster (in seconds?) than I can with the HOTAS (maybe a minute or so?).

LOL - yes it would seem so.

Sag* is a hard one but mostly due to all the stars and the inevitable slow down that would cause the map.

Give me an hour I'l post something on YouTube.

There you go.

Seems my noise gate is set to high in OBS, so I keep cutting out.

Nice tip with the filters there (although in this case it slightly defeats the exercise which is to demonstrate panning and zooming through a deliberately dense starfield while tying to bring one particular star under the cross hairs). That said you do a great job with the Colonia bookmark ... you've clearly got a pretty good handle navigating the galaxy map in VR these days, more practice for me I think! :)

If you have Voice Attack, it might be possible to implement a "paste text" verbal command. I think it would work, but I haven't tried it.

Not actually colonia bookmark but the random EL I discovered when I traveled there.

In VR, manually using the gal map to spot and hunt Neutron stars for boosts, cause why not.

Also in my experience icons like friends and ships etc stay visible even when you filter away the type of star they display, especially for dense star fields and their performance issues in VR, (it was pretty horrible in the center there even with filters on) so you can get close with filters on, then flick to realistic or adjust filters to make the actual selection.

I have that too, but the problem is you need to copy the text from somewhere first.
If you hardcode text strings, well then you could just use a bookmark.

True. My "use case" is that I copy some text to the Windows Clipboard, start ED, open the map, paste the text, and frequently make a bookmark. Currently, I use Ctrl+V to do the paste, but that is inconvenient. Not because I can't touch-type, but because my keyboard is in an awkward location, to make room for my joystick.

I may be dreaming but in the last live stream (crime and punishment), while Sandro was chatting, the other guy was playing ED. He used a virtual keyboard on the gal map. Maybe coming soon?

That is on the Xbox/PS4 and from what I can gather is built in the xbox/PS4 system software. Oculus or SteamVr would have to create their own version to work in VR for us to get one.

Logitech announced some devkit recently using one of their keyboards and a Vive tracking puck that looked amazing. I forget the link

That kind of thing would be amazing in not just elite, but virtual desktop software as well

Edit- found it

I'm not so enthused, but then again I'm one of those who can type just fine in VR, as long as I can see what I'm typing, like in RL.

For starters would probably only work with logitech hardware, only with Steamvr and knowing logicrap. most likely have 1\5 chance of sending windows into a BSOD.
Everything is really just done with the tracking puck and the vice camera, logitech really isn't doing much more than supplying the 3d model of the keyboard.
As for the overlays, if a game even can support this, they can also support regular motion controlled input and then why they need keyboard shortcuts, they can just make their own virtual menu's.
