Newcomer / Intro Galaxy Map Plot Route broken - stranded with no fuel

My ship has just jumped into a T (Brown Dwarf) Star system, even though I explicitly filtered out such stars in the Galaxy Map Pilots' Federation Star Class Map Mode.

How am I to refuel my starship (within 22 hours so I don't fail the three missions I was doing)?

Have you got enough fuel for a short hop to the nearest KGBFOAM type star?

Yes. Yes. And yes.

Thanks for your replies. I was able to find a short jump to a fuel star.

I just have to check the star type during every FSD charge up.

why is the Star Class filter broken?

It's been a problem for a while that if you go to the galaxy map and pick up the route directly after you log in, the game will re-plot without using the filter you set up in your previous session, even if you have the "apply filter to route" box checked. This might also happen in other circumstances where the route gets automatically re-plotted. (This is a different issue than the filter just losing its mind if you click on something in the UI, which was fixed under "Fixed Galaxy Map filters resetting" in the March 6th update.)

To avoid this, any time I see the galmap trying to re-plot the route on its own initiative I manually re-plot the route (for example by changing the route economic and back to fastest, then clicking "recalculate" in the route settings) after making sure the filter is set correctly .

Having said all that, it's pretty easy to set all the star types and just forget the "apply filter" box. So I try and keep an eye on the event log upper right in the screen immediately on hitting the jump bind, to check what type of star I'm jumping to (when it's not annoyingly obscured by some other info).

Two more suggestions in case you run out of (or are too low on) fuel:
  • synthesis. On you right hand HUD, in the inventory tab, there's also a section about synthesis. Besides ammo and limpets, you can also synthesize fuel injections for your FSD, increasing the jump range. Sometimes, that's useful in sparse regions of the galaxy where the next star is just out of reach, other times you can use it to increase your jump range when you're running low on fuel. You'll need some (and in the case of the highest level, rare) materials for that.
  • The Fuel Rats. They have fuel, and don't ask questions. Call them up (via IRC, their website or their Discord) and if they can save you, they probably will.

If you happen to be a "Code Red" (i.e. ran out of fuel and are subsiding on emergency oxygen), note your location (which system and, if possible, your position in that system), then log out of the game before calling the rats. Worst case1, you only got 5 minutes to live, and you don't want to spend 4 of those 5 minutes waiting for Dsipatch to find a Rat that can help you.

1 Which is one, but not the most important, reason I ususally run A rated life support - that also lets you vent your feelings (with interest) against the pilot who just cracked your canopy and still have enough reserves left to return to base for repairs.

I seem to remember seeing a "last scoop-able star in route" message (or some such wording) is that not so?

Combined with the dotted line on the route in the galaxy map I find it hard to understand how one can run out of fuel. I know it must happen a lot otherwise there would be no "Fuel Rats".

(Of course now I have posted that I will run out of fuel on my next trip - hubris thou are a female canine animal. ;) )

When it happened to me (travelling in a combat ship without scoop), I jumped into a system which I could have sworn was populated. Turned out that was the system next door which I couldn't reach any more...

When I was a new player, I once stupidly ran out of fuel in a newly purchased FDL (which has a notoriously short stock jump range) and so I called the Fuel Rats. The responding Rat was quick and awesome and taught me what I did wrong and how to avoid that in the future. I vowed to never need to call them again, and I have never needed to. They perform a great service indeed.

And note if it says whether the fuel star is the Primary star in the system.

I have managed to almost run out of fuel while exploring a fairly large system and doing exobiology even before SuperCruise Overcharge, it was in a Hauler which has a small tank and I had filled the tank when I arrived in the system.
