Galaxy map search with controller in VR ?

Either use preset system names using voice attack, or lift the headset so you can see the keyboard.

This is what I do. Not exactly immersive but it works. I think Oculus needs to add a virtual keyboard and not FD. I remember reading that somewhere.

There is now a virtual keyboard as part of the new Oculus Dash, still in beta but you can even try it from the current version of the Oculus software.

I've opened the game in 2D, tabbed/labelled all the places I want to go to, much easier this way, it should keep me going until whomever is responsible for making a keyboard appear in galaxy's "search", makes it work as advertised.

What headset do you own?

Ah okay, I see from one of your other posts that you have a Rift. As that's the case all you need to do is install the Oculus Dash beta via Oculus Home and ensure Elite is also installed in Home.

Info on installing Dash can be found here:

Redeeming Elite in Home can be done by:

Dash includes a Touch based onscreen keyboard which can be used to search the galaxy map as well as other cool features such pinning videos to your cockpit and the ability to browse the web in from the comfort of your cockpit. More details and tips can be found in this thread:

I find it amazing so many people this day and age refuse to learn such a basic skill as touch typing.

Not necessarily. Even an old relic like me, with blindingly fast touch typing skills (rusty as those skills may be, these days...) still prefers not having to reach past my HOTAS system and start poking for the keyboard in the dark. Hence my use of Voice Attack... just feels a little more VR-esque, if I may coin a term. Although, no doubt you are right: Typing skills in general are probably being relegated into the great dust bin of history...

I use an Xbox controller for the galactic map in VR too, but when I have to write down something, I do it with my keyboard, that I have in handy...
