Newcomer / Intro Galaxy Map Selections

So something I've always wondered about the galaxy map, and I do not know if it's specific to using a 360 controller or not, but the map itself is only selectable on a 2D plane. There are some stars, that appear to be close to where I'm at that I am unable to select because there is no selectable dot on the 2D plane my selection cursor is on. Is this normal? How do I select those other destinations that do not seem to intersect with that 2D plane?

I use a 360 controller myself but for the map, the mouse is easier. Hold second button to scroll up/down. Hold both buttons to scroll 2 dimensional around you. That way you can go everywhere on the map. Zooming isn't everything.

Hold X down and then move the left stick up or down. I didn't know that but 5 seconds experimentation figured it out.
