Some of these ideas may have been shared before but I figured I would share my vision. I've been doing a lot of Art Direction & UI planning for work lately and figured I'd take a crack at it visually. Here is a basic framework that I came up with.
Key Functionality Additions
I feel that these features could bring huge levels of depth and ownership to the game. Allow someone to do something simple like call a station home, or name their ship. These tiny little features are the difference between the cold sterility of computer generated space and a true emotional sense of immersion.

- User created favorites list. (Could be XML driven to allow users to create a hard copy / share trade & exploration routes. Multiple XML files would load as "Folders" with labels (Slave Route Large Pad, Unique Objects, All Modules, Ship Discounts, Friends Hangouts etc.) Sorting could be done as Custom Predefined Route, Alphabetical, LY Distance from Position, etc.
- Favorite Icons on galaxy map for visual recognition of notable systems. ( With a search database already in place I think this would be the easiest feature to implement )
- Ability to make small notations on system / station features.
