Galaxy Map with a HOTAS

I'm surprised I can't find an answer to this question (maybe I'm not searching very well), so I thought I'd ask. I'm loving my HOTAS with ED generally, but I still have to keep the mouse/keyboard handy for the galaxy map. The need for the keyboard to search for a system by name is one thing, but I'm just trying to do something as simple as plot a route. I've got my HOTAS all configured to navigate the map nicely, and I can select a system, but I can't find any kind of key bind that will let me then plot a route to it.

When I select a system I get a popup menu with several options, like plotting a route, getting system information, and buying trade data. But I don't find any keyboard shortcuts that work to navigate and select those options. It seems like I have to use the mouse. Am I wrong about that? Can somebody tell me what keys will activate those? I was kind of hoping the usual Q/E and spacebar would work, but they don't. Thanks in advance!
 
You can re-bind the keys in the options. I don't have a throttle but I re-bound a lot of the Galaxy Map navigation to buttons/axes on my joystick. I have a 2x3 grid of buttons on the base of my joystick that I basically bound to up-down-left-right selectors on the galaxy map. This allows me to navigate through the pop up menu that you mentioned without having to use the mouse. I'm at work now so I can't check what the actual bindings are but there should be a section for galaxy map or galaxy map overrides in the options. I can check what they are when I get home but I don't remember it being too hard to setup the first time.
 
I mapped my X52 for this quite well.
I have to use the Pinky Switch to get through all Axis, Menus and things, but now works pretty fine as i got used to it.
Don't know what the heck i mapped there exactly because its already only in my muscle memory and deleted in the brain now. :D

The Main thing is the Menu left/right - up/down on the lower POV Hat, and Manu Tab left/right on the upper one.
Pressing the Pinky and the lower hat will move my view there i think. The Paning i do with the Throtle's hat. The Two right blue buttons i use for zooming in and out.
(With the Pinky pressed, they are my Galaxy and System Map shortcuts.)
But as i said, don't know for sure. Some things i tried first to map overwrited or interfered with other non Galaxy Map stuff,
but my Binding basically goes back to Beta 1, so not sure if you still can run into things.

I'm surprised I can't find an answer to this question (maybe I'm not searching very well), so I thought I'd ask. I'm loving my HOTAS with ED generally, but I still have to keep the mouse/keyboard handy for the galaxy map. The need for the keyboard to search for a system by name is one thing, but I'm just trying to do something as simple as plot a route. I've got my HOTAS all configured to navigate the map nicely, and I can select a system, but I can't find any kind of key bind that will let me then plot a route to it.

When I select a system I get a popup menu with several options, like plotting a route, getting system information, and buying trade data. But I don't find any keyboard shortcuts that work to navigate and select those options. It seems like I have to use the mouse. Am I wrong about that? Can somebody tell me what keys will activate those? I was kind of hoping the usual Q/E and spacebar would work, but they don't. Thanks in advance!

What HOTAS you using mate?

I've mapped mine properly to the X55 (link to profile in my sig). Still it works well, but I find it quicker with the mouse so use that when I can reach it. Biggest issue was the slow speed of turning/moving and selection of a system was problematic from my experience.

First, in answer to this fellow's question, I'm using all CH Products gear: their throttle, pedals, and fighter-stick, which I've really come to love with this game.

But second, I'm surprised at the answers I'm getting here because none of those buttons work for me. When a star is selected in the galaxy map, not one key I've been able to find on my keyboard lets me navigate that menu. All the usual galaxy navigation keys for pitch, yaw, translation, etc. do what they're supposed to do, but I've found no way to change the tabs on the panel at the left or navigate that menu.

Looking at some of the profiles y'all have provided--thanks for those, by the way!--it seems as if you're using the WASD keys, the arrow keys, the Q and E keys, etc. Those keys serve galaxy map navigation functions but they do NOT let me select anything from that popup menu. I'm at a loss to explain why it seems so obvious for y'all and doesn't work for me. Hmm...
 
Is there a default mapping available in the settings for your gear? For the X52 Pro for instance, which I use, FD set as default(!) that the hatswitch on the throttle navigates the map, the control stick tilts and turns the view and the hatswitches on the stick navigate the menus.
 
My X-52 is mapped as followed: X/Y to scroll X/Y, Hat-Switch on throttle to tilt and the 2 rotarys on the throttle to scroll Z and zoom (its not the most intuitive soution)
 
There isn't a default mapping specifically for my HOTAS, but I've used the software tools to program it with the right button presses. It can navigate all the other menus in the game just fine because it's sending all the right keys. I can use it to navigate the galaxy map just fine, even select a system. My problem is that once a system is selected, I can't do a thing with the bloody popup menu because it doesn't seem like any keys on the keyboard activate it. Can anyone tell me what keys on the keyboard let me navigate that popup menu? Or the tabs on the panel to the left? If I just know which keys I can easily bind them.

You should be able to reach the pop-up menu with the same keys/buttons you normally use to navigate menus, including the left-hand menu of the galaxy map. Just press "UI right" until you see that the menu items are highlighted.
 
My bad I actually just bound my joystick buttons as the secondary buttons for the Interface functions and the Galaxy Map picks up on these.

Just to clarify how my setup works. In the Galaxy Map, WSAD and QE do NOT allow me to navigate the menus. Instead they tilt, pan, translate, etc around the map. I don't know if that is the default or if I changed it (at work again can't check). But the joystick buttons I assigned to the secondary bindings DO allow me to navigate menus.

For example when I first open the Galaxy Map, JOY 11 and JOY 13 allow me to flip through the tabs on the panel on the left (Info, Navigation, View, Options). If I have a star system highlighted, I press JOY 16 to switch focus to the pop up menu for that system. And I can get focus back onto the left panel by pressing JOY 14 as many times as necessary to switch it back to the left panel (for example if Plot route is my current selection in the pop up menu, I have to press JOY 14 twice to get focus back to the left panel).

I'm thinking that this works for me because I have them bound as secondary bindings. I would suggest trying to put some secondary bindings in there and seeing if you can use those to navigate menus on the Galaxy Map. Hopefully this wasn't too hard to follow.

Aha! Eureka! And other such exclamations of joy and understanding!

I think I understand what's happening. I set up my configuration by choosing the generic joystick option, then customizing as few controls as possible. That way it's easy for me to set it up again if anything goes wrong because the burden of having all the mappings right falls on my HOTAS software instead, which is easier to deal with and synchronize across machines. Here's the key to my problem: the generic joystick mapping uses WASD, QE, and space to work the UI panels, which the galaxy map overrides by default for its own bindings. The result is that when you're in the galaxy map I basically have no keys that work to do what I'm trying to do. That seems like a significant goof with the generic joystick profile to me.

Once I rebound some of the UI handling keys to the "classic keyboard" equivalents (e.g., arrows, del/end), it works just fine. Now I get it. Is there some way to bring this to the attention of the developers? It seems like a shame to me that using the very profiles they ship with the game can make things so complicated. Thanks for all the help, folks!
 
This is where the keyboard and mouse come back into play. I wouldn't expect to use all equipment in a cockpit with just your HOTAS. But if you can great. Usually when I've tried this tactic it took much longer to navigate through menus trying to use the buttons on a joystick rather than just grabbing the mouse and pointing and clicking. While using an OR I'd imagine the necessity for this would be greater.

Generic profiles are for those that want to try it without having to set up their HOTAS using the provided software that comes with it. Using the in game profile probably has it's limitations, plus those that seem to use the in game profiles will regularly have to reset all their keys due to an update.
