Galaxy modeling and updates?

Since the ED galaxy is modeled after ours in real life, will FD be using the International Star Registry for naming the stars?

What about new discoveries in the galaxy will ED keep up with what astronomers learn? For instance if the star Rigel has two gas giants in ED but scientist discover that there are four would FD make those changes in future updates? I would really enjoy flying to a planet that closely resembles the real deal. Teachers may even take advantage of it by having class trips in Cobra Mk llls! :D
 
I believe FD are using the Hipparcos and Gliese catalogues for known/nearby stars - beyond that, I don't know.
 
I looked up the charts you mentioned Mr Shakey. It is amazing that we will be flying in a practically endless galaxy having 100 billion star systems. On one of the charts it was showing description of planets that orbit stars. Like this:
Gliese 436
Gliese 436 b, an extrasolar planet orbiting the red dwarf Gliese 436
Gliese 436 c, a hypothesized extrasolar planet orbiting the red dwarf Gliese 436 that is 5 times bigger than Earth
How close is FD going to be to IRL data and if astronomers find a Gliese 436d would FD add that planet to the star system in a future update to mirror the galaxy?
 
That's cool!! A planet that may have life in a triple star system! Only 22 light years away. Maybe FD turned that one into one big tropical beach front:D
 
I think they have to draw the line somewhere in terms of updates, the rate at which they discover exoplanets nowadays is pretty insane, so they would be changing stuff on a weekly basis if they wanted to keep it 100% accurate all of the time. Then again who knows!

My biggest hope is to see space stations orbiting truly massive planets. I am so used to seeing small distant worlds in space games (often in high orbit), so it would be nice to see something close to the concept art, as seen here, and here.

That sense of scale would be immense.

I do recall David Braben mentioning in one of the earlier dev diaries that they have the ability to inject data from many sources even after release and also this from the the latest newsletter:

"We’re striving to make the Elite: Dangerous Milky Way as accurate as possible. As part of this we are using a variety of sources for the celestial bodies data, and that includes confirmed exoplanets from the Kepler data and many other sources."
 
Once a player visits a system, it would be stretching it if, upon their next visit, a new planet had automagically appeared.
I suppose you could handwavium it for remote, mostly unexplored, systems - but...

Yes, that would be rather odd lol. Or you load and blow up as you happen to find yourself in an alien mountain.
 
Perhaps they could insert new data wherever it corresponds to an unexplored system. After all, some exoplanets are 1000s of light years away, so players might not get out that far right away. But once a system is explored, it doesn't seem like it would be possible to update without breaking the exploration mechanics of the game.
 
Actually it could make things more interesting person x explores system A, Frontier add more content to A and person Y discovers new feature in system A. This would add another facet to exploring that maybe being second you will still find something
 
I believe there is some time, Frontier said that only the systems with no direct impact on the game could be changed. It is diffcult to change the parameters of a system if there is already a dynamic, on this system
