GalMap needs umm 'something'

Does anyone else have trouble using the GalMap?

Since Beta dropped I have been doing a lot more exploration and at far longer distances. But I have found the GalMap doesn't make things easy. Sure IF you know the name of the system you wish to visit you can type it in, and GalMap will go right to it. That is IF you managed to type the name of the system correctly, or if you even know the name of the system.

For example, I decided to take a trip to the California Nebula. I could see it clearly on the GalMap, but it took way too long for me to be able to drill down, in the right direction, to be finally in a position where I could start to see the icons for the systems to be able to click on them. Surely there has to be a better way now of being able to select points of interest in the GalMap than just endless clicking and hoping you are moving in the right direction!

Secondly, and this is just a minor one is that the GalMap will allow you to plot a route based on systems you haven't visited. Which of course is great, until you decide to head home. It seems that all those systems you have already visited won't be recongised as you visiting them until you have sold the data (yes it kind of makes sense). So you end up dropping into systems you have already scanned/mapped which is disappointing. Maybe the plotting function of the GalMap could interact with the stored exploration data on your ship to alleviate this, heck I don't know, but it was kind of annoying in a minor way lol

You know you can just type 'California Nebula' - right?

Sounds like a bug - I have performed area searches using that filter to make sure I visit only new systems (e.g. visiting the 2000+ systems in the Eta Carina Nebula). So you certainly didn't used to need to sell the data - are you sure you checked the 'apply filter to route' option (something like that)?

I actually tried that, even checked the spelling I did, but nothing happened. Maybe it is a glitch in the Beta or something, will try it again if that is a valid way of navigating the GalMap.

Cheers

Only real problem I've ever had with the galaxy and system map is when the tooltip becomes sticky and won't change when hovering over something else, or the tool tip getting in the way of a body making it impossible to select whatever it is over. Work around is to zoom in/out and attempt to re-select again until it works but that's my issue.

I haven't run into what you describe, but based on how you describe it I can see it being a problem. Those minor gripes have heavy weight after a while.

I made sure the 'apply to filter to route' was checked, maybe my fault for finally getting to my destination then heading straight back. I know I revisited several systems on the way back because I remembered them due to the planets and the systems now showing as 100% mapped. Again, maybe it is a Beta thing or something [shrugs]

If the galmap had the same level of user-friendliness that EDDB has, it'd be a helluva lot better.

If only there was the ability for the search box on the GalMap to autofill like other user inputs in the UI, some of the system names can be problematic to type in and get right the first time can't they!

You need to know how the search toolbar works in the Galmap, my tip for you is to type part of the name and hit enter a couple of times until it nails it.

I agree though, the galmap isn't very good, I hate that it does a reset when you exit so you need to look for the system you were inspecting.

Hmm, if you're heading straight back then (over a long trip) hen maybe avoiding certain systems would cause you to need to divert more than the router likes, so it will use those visited locations - I wasn't usually doing A -B - A, more searching a volume. I could tell it was working because towards the end it would route me 'around' the central area, because that had been nearly cleared.

Again, maybe it's been broken in beta <shrug>

And searching by nebula name certainly was working for some nebula - like you I was finding them hard to navigate to, so just types them from the galmap display. Maybe California isn't one that does that - I'll check next time I log in.

Right, better leave this thread, I'll be in trouble with stealthie as we're just supposed to discuss in this forum apparently, no facts ;)

Just tried it in the beta - works fine with California Nebula and Bubble Nebula. Give it another go ;)
