Jump ranges have dramatically increased over the years. With engineers, FSD injections, neutron boosts and Guardian boosters, it's not much of a stretch to get 300+ly. However, the galaxy map has not kept up with these increases. If you zoom the map out so that you can find something 300ly away, the stars are too small to see/select. If you zoom in so that the stars are visible, you can't see 300ly away.
I'd like some sort of sliding scale so that you can increase/decrease the size of the stars on the map, although I have no real idea how it could be implemented. Perhaps when you click a star, with the popup menu that gives you Select, Plot Route, Bookmark, and System Map, could be another button (Local Area) which opens a new map; a small, limited portion of the main map, a 300x300x300 cube which can be rotated but not scrolled, and most importantly gives you a sliding scale to resize the displayed stars.
