MARLINISTS HOLD PUBLIC REFERENDUM

05 APR 3308
The population of the Marlinist Colonies will vote to accept or decline the offer to become an Imperial protectorate.
Emperor Arissa Lavigny-Duval’s proposal aims to build links between the independent colony systems and the Empire, from where the Marlinists originally fled as political refugees in 3306.
The Marlin Standard ran an editorial summarising the situation:
“Should the Marlinist Colonies remain an isolated republican society, or should we move beneath the Empire’s protective wing? It’s a question that most of us never expected to be asked.”
“Many expressed fierce anger that Emperor Arissa has dared to ask for our allegiance. In her desperation to hunt down the NMLA she persecuted all believers in Marlinism, arresting thousands and displacing millions of her own citizens. Can we now trust her to welcome us back?”
“Others are concerned that the Marlinist Colonies remain vulnerable, claiming that becoming a satellite nation of the Empire would provide military defences as well as economic boosts. And for those still holding on to their past lives, the attraction of reconnecting with friends and family in the Empire is strong.”
“Whatever the outcome, First Minister Octavia Volkov’s swift decision to put this issue to a referendum is a splendid example of Marlinism in action. Votes are already being cast, and the result will be revealed at the end of this week.”

I see a CG in the future :
Deliver mat for the referendum.
-if you support the "against" side : you get nothing
-if you support the "for" side : you get a free cutter and/or double engineered shield boosters (heavy duty + resistance augmented)

Democracy in action.

Joke aside, it will probably be an off screen vote, and we'll get to deal with the result. Like Mahon re-election.

Hoping they accept. With the extremist NMLA/Lords of Restoration threats gone, it's time to unite and stand stronger together.

Nah, let the traitors live in their own little systems and let them deal with the dangers of the galaxy on their own. No need to waste any more precious Imperial blood for them. They've made their bed, now they can sleep in it.

Technically speaking, it was the Empire's senate that did all the treason.

Marlinists jumped on the bandwaggong provided by "NMLA"'s actions. It's only in hindsight that we knew about the so called "Lords of Restoration" and that the entire "NMLA" was just the creation of a second group of traitors within the Empire. Marlinists threw in their lot with NMLA well before the recent discoveries

PS It's just some background lore in a videogame. I hope you guys are aware that I'm not really "ranting" or that I have ANY emotions about this lore stuff, right? I just like semi-roleplaying the staunch Imperial CMDR ;)

I wouldn't mind if they gave the vote to those who have adopted the marlinist systems.
I would be against opening it up to the whole community as it may not reflect the wishes of those involved with it.
FD's call...

Seems like a big can of worms though, i suspect..
They can effectively do both - with Marlinist factions in control of their original 8 systems and a further 13 nearby, their own ability to manage their space and convert others to Marlinist thinking in spite of interference is shown.

Had the initial losses of systems continued so that they were all now essentially protectorates of some nearby factions anyway, I expect the fragmented Marlinist population might well have been rather more inclined to take the deal.

There were plenty of hints earlier on - Scordato's reports, for example - that the BGS state of the factions might be significant, so a later Galnet which keeps them independent citing their success so far would have allowed the entire community to participate in the decision without anything as inelegant as a competitive CG.

We literally murdered one of our own politicians just to get the NMLA out of our Colonies after they bombed our starports. I don't think we threw our lot in with them.

If you want to know the opinion of the Marlinists themselves, check out the Lore & Roleplay section of the forums. Specifically these posts:
