GALNET - 05 FEB 3307 - Jupiter Rochester Named in Starship One Trial

Core Dynamics CEO Jupiter Rochester has been accused of collaborating with Fleet Admiral Vincent to orchestrate Starship One’s destruction in 3301.

As reported by Ethan Takahashi for The Federal Times:

“Financial data was presented to the court showing that Vincent, along with others in government and the Federal Navy, received colossal payments via shell companies created by Jupiter Rochester’s loyalists.”

“The prosecution claimed that Rochester and Vincent were reacting to then-President Jasmina Halsey’s intention to scale back military spending, which would impact Core Dynamics’s profits. They arranged to assassinate her and lay groundwork for Zachary Hudson to be voted into power, knowing that his policies would result in further naval contracts.”

“The defence argued that Halsey’s testimony was unreliable, and that the financial data was obtained via improper methods so should have been inadmissible. It was also pointed out that the Rochester family had many enemies determined to besmirch their reputation.”

“The jury has now been sequestered to determine a verdict. This means they are unaware of media reports that several Core Dynamics departments, known collectively as ‘Jupiter Division’, are transporting ships and personnel to the HIP 54530 system.”

Other sources confirmed that the HIP 54530 Gold Universal Group has officially assumed the name Jupiter Division, suggesting that it was heavily infiltrated by Rochester’s loyalists. The faction has retained control of the permit-locked HIP 54530 system.

At long last... Core Dynamics were implicated in the murder of Vice President Smeaton all the way back in 3301, as well as a whole pile of other deaths and disappearances of those investigating Starship One and the Antares. Didn't go anywhere because they got a hold of the incriminating data and effectively investigated themselves, and of course Hudson wasn't going to make the investigation public.

Hell, the Rochesters themselves weren't even named directly there, but with Jupiter being the CEO, two others being high-ranking Federal Navy officials, and Isolde Rochester herself eventually replacing the murdered VP...kinda sus yknow, even disregarding everything else the Rochesters have their hands in.

Isolde Rochester is the member of the Club known as Personnel. If Jupiter is amassing some sort of private army in HIP 54530, probably to protect himself, then they need to be destroyed. Looking forward to next week...

" In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together "

I was going to go find that video after reading OP!

I wouldn't be surprised if in 1000 years it is still an unheeded cautionary tale.

Looks like someone is preparing their exit plan. Only question is for whom? Vincent is probably not important enough, Rochester strikes me as someone who would have other options if the Fednecks were to go after him. Hudson however... If he gets ousted over this there wouldn't be many systems available for "political exile" other than one that makes extradition quasi impossible via permit lock. Plus, for the Rochesters there's some value in keeping him around.

From the Dpt. of Wild Predictions:
  • Vincent gets convicted
  • Jupiter is publicly shocked to find out "rogue" management was involved in this, vows to fire said patsy employee and issues a non-binding resolution to "be better, so sorry"
  • Hudson decides to personally investigate the shenanigans in HIP 54530 and declares himself the sole victim of this despicable coup by Winters, obviously
  • And, on her way out, Halsey slips Jupiter a personal note from the Prime Minister himself: "This is what happens when you frak with Lakon. Regards, Eddie"

Interesting!

Foe awhile, I was thinking that Frontier was building up the Rochesters to be a new Federation PowerPlay industrial/corporate power, a Fed equivalent of Zemina Torval or Li-Yong Rui. But then it was announced that Isolde Rochester was backing Felicity Winters, which seemed to rule out becoming a separate Power.

But if there's a suspicion that the Rochesters tried to assassinate a Liberal president to put a Republican in charge, Winters isn't going to like that, and Hudson will have to disown them too.

And as the Pilots Federation ultimately controls access to HIP 54530 (as they control the permit system), I wonder if they will grant a special pass to pilots pledged to Hudson and Winters, if war occurs.

ooc:

Anyone else getting deja-vu-vibes after recalling that one episode of DS9 when Riker's transporter-accicent clone stole the Defiant and they discovered an illegal Cardassian fleet of warships in a system under control of the Obsidian Order?

Huh, seems I "may" be right in my though that Hudson wasn't a part of the plot and that those who orchestrated the attempt just saw him as a useful idiot that they could prod in the "right" direction. Still dislike Jupiter for messing with my lovely Lakon

Also begun to regret taking my FC and my combat fleet out to the Elysian Shores for some sightseeing, may have to hurry back if there is some Jupiter kicking going to take place! 👃

More of an issue for Winters than Hudson, I'd say.

Hudson doesn't appear to have known anything about this (and did encourage people to go searching for SS1 escape pods, and was at least publicly happy when Halsey was found). The recent publicity about Core Dynamics suggests that the bit that makes the Federal warships is less connected to the Rochesters, though now would be a very good time to check the fleet for backdoors.

Winters has Isolde Rochester as her deputy and Jordan Rochester as an ambassador supporting her policies on Marlinist refugees. She's much more connected to that family - whether she wants to be or not - and yes, I expect some very prominent enforced resignations there.

Very lucky escape for Mahon that this has happened before the Lakon sale, too...

BUT NO I THOUGHT FEDS WERE OMNIPOTENT AND NOT AS MORALLY BANKRUPT AS THE EMPIRE QUICK DEPLOY MORE IMPERIAL TORTURE CAMP PROPAGANDA 😭😭😭😭

Welp, now I need to get that permit and see if anything's going on there... but I'm working this weekend :(
