GALNET - 07 SEP 3307 - Mahon: Sirius Treaty Would Save Aegis

Prime Minister Edmund Mahon has commented on the Aegis inquiry and his failed proposal to unify anti-xeno operations.

As part of an interview with The Alliance Tribune, he said:

“The greatest regret of my career is that I was unable to formalise the Sirius Treaty at the Galactic Summit. This would have revolutionised Aegis by providing the commitment and resources it deserves, sparing it the indignity of a public inquiry.”

“The Nine Martyrs attacks prevented that historic occasion, of course, but the Sirius Treaty itself remains viable. I’d be happy to ratify it on behalf of the Alliance if we can convince the other signatories that defending humanity from the Thargoid threat should be our utmost priority.”

Investigators continue to gather information regarding Aegis’s operations. There have been further resignations of key staff, and financial records are being independently audited.

Dr Paul Baumann, chair of the board of inquiry, confirmed that charges of criminal negligence could be brought against key figures within Aegis given sufficient evidence. However, there is uncertainty as to which court would deal with legal proceedings for a tri-superpower organisation.

The "indignity of a public inquiry" is mostly because of gross incompetence resulting in the loss of a megaship, not because of a lack of funding...

Yeah, I don't see this happening as both the Federation and the Empire made it clear that they are not willing not recognize a "Kumo state", which they'd be kind of forced to if they were to sign the Sirius Treaty as DeLaine also intends to sign it.

However, there is uncertainty as to which court would deal with legal proceedings for a tri-superpower organisation.

This feels like it really shouldn't be an issue.

It's been established (on at least three separate occasions in Galnet) that suspects are entitled to be tried in the jurisdiction they're a citizen of. If that means trying multiple people in different jurisdictions with different legal standards for their part in the same offence, well, that's no different to any other time that two people with different citizenship cooperate to commit a crime.

Well... almost no different. Given the political nature of the organisation, every superpower has an incentive to acquit its own citizens to pin the blame for Aegis' failings on the other two.

That should make clear that criminal trials, even if charges could be found, are not the appropriate way to handle accountability for what's a political rather than legal problem - but if they want to press ahead with the criminal charges route the legal position is surely fully covered by existing treaties and precedents.

How about you guys pump out some new weaponry and then well talk about giving you more money. They had all the resources and money they could handle for years and we got squat for it. Surely they have at least one or two things sitting on the drawing board theyve been holding back. If not then they need to either get it in gear or move over.

Give me focused plasma chargers and we’re good

Mahon "dead catting" the AEGIS inquiry I see...

What is he worried they'll dig up?
There doesn't even need to be anything particularly wrong with AEGIS for them to dig up (beyond its general "not all that useful" nature, anyway)

The Alliance is the only one of the three superpowers really facing Thargoid attacks, so convincing the other two - still much larger - superpowers to fund defenses against them is basically free money for his expansionism.
