GALNET - 08 DEC 3306 - Marlinist Refugee Crisis Grows Critical

Hundreds of thousands of political refugees who fled from the Empire to the Federation have brought both superpowers to the brink of conflict.

The Marlinists, who believe in restructuring the Empire into a republic, escaped crackdowns in several Imperial systems during a hunt for Neo-Marlinist terrorists.

The Federation has provided temporary safe haven for the refugees. However, security concerns proved to be justified when the NMLA bombed a Federal starport where captured members were being held.

The Federal Security Service provided this update:

“The Marlinists themselves have informed us of more individuals among them with NMLA connections. The risk of terrorism from this population is now low, although it’s impossible to know exactly how many have been radicalised.”

There have been heated debates in Congress over granting citizenship to the Marlinists. President Hudson insisted that “all illegal aliens must be deported”, and has strengthened the Federal Navy as a defensive measure in light of the Empire’s warnings.

Conversely, Shadow President Winters argued that “turning away starving refugees to face imprisonment and discrimination would be immoral”. She also noted that the same principles of democratic representation found in Marlinism are enshrined in the Federal Accord.

This disagreement between the Republican and Liberal Parties has led to stalemate, with the fate of the Marlinists hanging in the balance.

And once again us Imperials can just claim "Told you so!" towards the Fednecks and their inability to listen just b/c they dislike us. 🧐

If there's a conflict, then I'm in. We still haven't had payback for Harold. Whoever is behind the NMLA needs to be found and brought to justice - preferably Imperial.

We just need to rein Patty in long enough to get it done it right this time.

Aren't there some new stations in the Coalsack sector, and aren't there soon to be new terraformed AWs to populate - send them over there and let them bomb the Alliance for a change!

Leave it to the Federal Congress to eff up a situation that has a very simple solution.
  1. Filter out the more egregious members of the NMLA, the starport bombers and the assassins of Harold and would be assasins of Aisling and others, hand them over to the Imperials for trial.
  2. Grant conditional amnesty to the Marlinists, the condition being to give up trying to initiate regime change in the empire. You're in the Federation now and if you expect to be a citizen of the Federation then you need to understand that the Feds don't abide such criminality either. Grant amnesty to any low level criminality and terrorism, things that didn't result in deaths. But with the understanding that any further acts will result in reprisal based on what was committed and against whom.
  3. Grant a pathway to citizenship for all Marlinists, I said a pathway not blanket citizenship, if they want it, they have to EARN it, one of the ways by not engaging in further criminality against the empire. Those that prove themselves and follow the laws are allowed to get full Federal citizenship.
  4. After a period of time, there will be some Marlinists, potentially radicalized ones, who haven't walked the pathway and want to continue said criminality, they will be in the minority but, to those people, several results depending on their further actions.
    1. Criminal acts against the Feds, then try them and throw them in prison,
    2. Criminal acts against the Empire, deport them and let them face imperial justice.
    3. Unwillingness to compromise but not direct criminality, to want to continue the fight against the empire. Deportation to an Independent or Anarchy system of their choice.
In short, the Marlinists who really just want a better life under a democratic form of government are allowed and enabled to do so under Federal jurisdiction. The angry and bitter and want to continue to be belligerent against the empire are deported and left to their own devices. Further acts of terrorism will not be tolerated by the Federation, and as such the Federation should boot you out, not only to protect itself but the rest of the Marlinists who just wanted to get the heck out of dodge, not fight a revolution.

Just send em up to Alioth. They'll be Thargoid food soon anyway. :)

Yeah..... I've been concerned what my adopted superpower has been up to with the Thargoids. Poking the bear like that isn't good for all involved.
If the Thargoids come back I'll rescue civilians, repair stations and run medicines - but I won't be loading up for AX. We did this to ourselves.

Now the marlinists are snitching NMLA elements? Wouldn't be surprised if the NMLA retaliation makes one of the marlinist megaships go boom next week.

So much could be avoided if they admited there was an issue with extremists and cooperated from the beginning.

Yes, but then it wouldn’t be called “bad FDEV writing” without some really obvious plot holes, would it?

It’s also really obvious that the Marlinists could have just gone to Aisling space to live in one of our beloved Princess’s many cooperative democratic governments instead of bombing the Empire.
