GALNET - 12 APR 3308 - ARISSA ACCEPTS MARLINISTS’ INDEPENDENCE

My theory is that it's because she went through a lot is why she's letting this go. She dealt with so much crap from the Marlinists and people claiming to be Marlinists and she has so many bigger issues to deal with (the Thargoids, the Lords of Restoration, Hadrian's rise in influence, Hudson and Mahon's authoritarian streaks, among others) that just letting the Marlinists leave is an extremely convenient way to get them out of her hair.

Considering what the Lords of Restoration just got caught doing, I'm sure the Senate hardliners know to keep their mouths shut until this all blows over. (and those who don't will quickly find themselves in front of a firing squad without many people bold enough to argue on their behalf)

As for Patreus? Arissa, probably: "Denton can go cry about it. Oppressing everyone just made the problem worse and got me shoved in a fridge."

Not to mention there's probably a lot of scrutiny on him given his oppression of the Marlinists played into the Lords of Restoration's hands.
Depends though- if it ever comes down to choosing a new Emperor in the near furture people will remember perceived weakness, something you don't want when its a three way tie.

Or the ultra hardcore senators grumbling and fomenting a new cadre of plotters if she lives a long time, or that the Marlinists cause headaches for the senate (and embarrassing ALD).
I think us Marlinists are mostly pacified for the time being. We're happy to have our independence, so we're not going to try to start problems for her any time soon.

Plus we're a little distance away from Empire systems so we're not conquering any of their systems yet.

Having turned down Imperial protection now, should the colonies every be forced to ask for Imperial assistance in the future, they can expect to pay a high price.

Well it will be interesting to see how this politically pans out- ALD is kind of having to sort out a mess not of her doing, and she's taken a political hit to stop things going full crazy.

Denton agrees

It's not necessarily a particularly weak option - sure, it would have been better for her if they accepted the deal, but this is probably about as good as it could be for both sides.

The Marlinists get their independence recognised, with all that entails (though they'll be fine, I think). The Empire gets an agreement that they won't be a safe haven or funder for further neo-Marlinists - which they might otherwise end up becoming in a generation or so, and was probably the main motivation for the protectorate approach - and can potentially attract them back individually through the resettlement scheme (which does of course require some reduction in obvious suppression of Marlinism within the Empire) without having to take risky military action or try to maintain a shaky protectorate, and also potentially it provides a safety valve for future Marlinist unrest within the Empire if the resettlement options work both ways.

It won't be completely straightforward, but it also fits in with ALD's previous preference for "soft" power and cooperation to build coalitions or at least influence with non-Imperial powers. (Compare with her approach via the Blue Star Line to Colonia)

And the fact that there's an agreement that we won't tolerate neo-marlinism also gives her or future emperors the ability to attack or sanction us without diplomatic consequences if we're discovered to have knowingly violated the agreement and sponsored terrorists.

I think she is consolidating her power base. With her kidnapping, she was made acutely aware that the main threats may be closer to her than previously known.
Marlinists are no threats, and to fight them would involve a high cost for very little, since they'll likely get support from the independents and probably even the fed.

I'm gonna blatantly infringe on a Flimley trademark here but: Hooray for everything! 😊

Really glad to see amicable relations forming between the Marlinist colonies and the Empire. Even more glad that Colonel Landau wasn't completely forgotten (in-game as well as out). That lady deserves every honoring possible, given her crucial role in uncovering the real traitors and saving Her Majesty.
And if Denny is feeling a bit restless he can probably start by sending some reinforcements to Summerland - Darkwater Inc has seen a sharp rise in influence over the last couple of days, and their resurgence in his backyard might not look too good for him. 😗

In the same way that a broken clock is occasionally right, an oppressive totalitarian regime can occasionally do the right thing.
