Alliance Assembly Votes to End Sirius Defence Pact

ALLIANCE ASSEMBLY VOTES TO END SIRIUS DEFENCE PACT

The Alliance Assembly has voted to end the strategic defence pact between the Alliance and Sirius Corporation.

The pact, agreed in January 3308, was a response to growing Thargoid hostility in the months prior to the alien invasion of the core systems. At the time, the Alliance Defence Force was seen as lacking adequate Anti-Xeno modules and defences. Sirius Corporation spent billions on refitting ADF vessels over the past three years, but has been accused of leveraging its position to secure profitable contracts in unrelated fields.

The motion to end the pact was raised by Councilor Nakato Kaine, seconded by Councilor Ainsley Niven of Reorte, and was approved by a slim majority. In her opening argument Kaine had called the pact an ‘opportunistic ploy for military influence in Alliance space, with eyes on a monopoly over small corporations founded in Alliance member systems.’

Prime Minister Edmund Mahon had argued in favour of maintaining the pact, pointing out that ‘the recent Thargoid invasion is unlikely to be the last xeno threat we ever see, and the ADF benefits greatly from Sirius Corp’s technology and industrial might.’

Analysts believe that a reduced Sirius Corp presence in Allied military industry and related business will trigger a frantic rush from other companies to fill the supply chain.

Sirius Corporation has not yet issued a statement to the media.

It has been a while since we got a good GalNet with some real and possibly wider-reaching lore implications (aside from the supposed colonization population "migration"), so I figured this one was worth throwing up on the main page.

My comments?

Ouch. Sirius 0, Kaine 1. That was one punch to deliver. I'll be very interested in seeing where this goes.

Nice to see actual lore again, I'll try and avoid raising my hopes this time.

Anyway, better late than never. Now that it's over, it would be nice to get some more information on the actual consequences of the deal, I feel we missed out on much of it due to GalNet just turning into TitanWatch for ages.
The deal was obviously bad and corrupt, but that doesn't mean much if it just translates to a few articles foreshadowing that and then later it ends. Give us a corruption inquest that just spells out how badly the Alliance got screwed by siding with Sirius.

Like, Sirius spent "billions"? I realise that's probably just a ballpark figure that wasn't thought through, but it could also just be lore-accurate. Sounds like Sirius got a hell of a return on investment if the equipment they were being paid a literally classified amount for by the Alliance amounted to a few billion in costs. I mean, the AX megaships were literally retrofitted cargo ships, that'll have saved some costs.

And then you have however much Sirius profited from all the other markets they cornered as a result, the Sirius "advisors" installed into political offices for surely only good purposes. There's so much room here for further lore and consequences.

can you tell I'm both starved for lore and still salty that the Alliance sided with Sirius?

A CG featuring Kaine vs LYR on the horizon?

I'm sure they'll run CGs to involve all the powers, eventually, so this might as well be the setup for the next one.
Or Kaine vs Mahon, could be either. I assume there wouldn't be a three-sided one anyway. Perhaps we'll see something come of this next week in terms of in-game actionable stuff.

But no pilots federation alert
Not right now, no. Frontier did once pull a sneaky one, though, when an article about something that could very much be found in-game (an old Guardian-Thargoid battleground near a location of a hyperdiction in the absolute middle of nowhere), was not marked with a "Pilot's Federation Alert".

As lore drops go, wasn't exactly one I expected today (this Friday), for sure.

I'd laugh myself silly if a Titan drops into Tionisla.
... and I almost expected some of those signature meme images to drop for the occasion. I'm sure LYR is fuming inside his office tower in Sirius right now... it has only been setbacks for them lately. Though the one inflicted on them in the Coalsack nebula is spoken of rather little (it wasn't anything so much lore as me kicking them out of there as a lone player, before we got all this colonization malarkey).

I would like to know why this pact wasn't being enforced when I was flying through Alliance space and getting shot at by Mahon security forces

Or rather Mahon 0-1 Kaine.

This might have bigger repercussions for Mahon than Sirius Corp.
Considering how much he has been "best buddies" with Sirius for a couple years now, it's almost the same thing.

Starting to have this feeling the Titan incursion might have had/will have more effects than just shake up the technology market... (if we put aside the more obvious impacts it has had on the fringes and then Sol/surrounding area when Cocijo decided to go sightseeing) I figure it would have drawn more attention to whether that pact was actually resulting in anything tangible, at least.

It didn't help that Sirius at the same time was poking the hornets nest themselves by attempting to terraform ammonia worlds, which you can imagine the Thargoids would frown upon.

Not before wiping out (in PP terms) Kaines nearby systems and watching as Mahon sucks them up like a Friday night milkshake.
I still think just send it to Alioth, maybe the Thargoids will find that supposed translator rumored to exist (of course I know its existence has not been particularly confirmed or hinted at for ED) and hogged by Bill Turner on behalf of the Club [this is speculation as well], then be able to tell us all how stupid we are afterward.

Just for giggles mind. Not for evil deep rooted reasons or anything.

This is what I mean. Salty, spicy drama so satisfying to watch you want slices served with roast potatoes.
Isn't that what Powerplay should be all about in the first place? Not holding hands singing "Kumbaya" and drinking tea while politely discussing who's allowed to undermine whom (ahem, ZYADA, ahem)?🤪

You'd think so- (possibly?) Dentons starting to feel a bit lonely and Groms being hit (from somewhere, although possibly via non legit methods). But as far as the girls, they are all dancing about, Martinis in hand.
