FAR GOD CULT UNDER FEDERAL SCRUTINY

20 SEP 3308
The Order of the Far God is facing an official investigation and increased public maltreatment within the Federation.
Freelance journalist Alexei Keel published a special report via Vox Galactica:
“The Thargoid-worshipping cult has always been a controversial faith on Federal worlds. But it is currently causing a civil backlash of the sort not seen since 3304.”
“A recent exposé by the Federal Free Press proves that naval intelligence operatives are investigating all chapters of the cult established in Federal space. Allegedly, there are suspicions that cultists may be undertaking acts of espionage to sabotage anti-xeno operations.”
“As more details of the Battle of HIP 22460 become public knowledge, the pacifistic cultists have become an easy target for ordinary people seeking some kind of revenge against overtly pro-Thargoid ideologies. Although security forces claim to be responding to these vigilante attacks, widespread prejudice means that local police rarely act when such crimes are reported.”
Antipathy to the religion has increased to the point where prominent figures in the Federal government are calling for it be outlawed. As Secretary of State Lana Berkovich put it: “Humanity is at war with the Thargoids. To allow an army of crazed alien sympathisers within our society is to invite disaster.”
All of this has driven thousands of worshippers to abandon their hive-chapels and join the more radical True Chapters sect. Welcoming the new converts, the First Apostle proclaimed: “We must defend our faith and ourselves, so we may witness the Far God’s manifestation with our own eyes.”
The exotheologian Dr Alfred Ulyanov has remarked on this as “a fundamental shift from the fatalism of their conventional beliefs”. Keel raises the question in his report: what happens if Far God cultists stop tolerating these hostile acts and start fighting for survival?

I'm a bit disappointed at the predictability of this step. Wouldn't it be fun if Hudson suddenly went hardcore Far God convert? Imagine the fun and games that would arise. I mean, I know the concept of a President pandering to and encouraging lunatic theories is completely unbelievable but we could give it a try here ...

If they weren't your enemies, that's how you make them. Never a good idea to radicalize religious fringe cults and not expect a caustic bomb stuffed into inconvenient places.
It would not surprise me to find that the First Apostle is one of Theta Group, too. We know more than just Theta Seven hid out with the Far God Cult; we don't know for certain that any other than Seven were on the Sacrosanct.

Of course, the experience of the Empire with the NMLA does provide a good lesson for the Federation: specifically, that it's fine to quietly radicalise people from discontent into terrorism, because public support won't see that and will side with you against your apparent aggressor.

Some have publicly suspected Far God Cult to be responsible for the recent Canonn compromise, which I am against as it's outside of the game.
This Article doesn't exactly ease the tensions there.

That, and the unexplained disappearance of a number of cats in the neighborhood along with a shortage of ammonia from some of the grocery stores here.

The terrorists were defeated, but the non-extremists separated and estabilished their own territory - the marlinist colonies. So this part was a loss of population for the Empire.

So in the long run if the Federation wants to be further reduced by having the non-extremist Far God worshippers just straight up leave and settle their own territory, yes, they are going a great job here.

I thought the Federation didn't bother with investigations any more? They've got the Proactive Detection Bureau to just say "hey, they look like they'll do something dodgy next month, bang them up in advance".

We've had this story arc before. Widespread abuse of FGC cultists and wild accusations from those in power, authorities reluctant to act, investigation clears FGC of any wrongdoing.

Only difference here seems to be the hint that the normally pacifist FGC might be pushed to breaking point and feel the need to retaliate in some way. Which, as we've seen with the Thargoids, definitely won't be taken out of context and used as propaganda and justification for the initial abuse. Hi Hudson.

If they care about Thargoids so much, I'm sure they can take the nearest transport, deliver themselves to nearest NHSS or barnacle site and spread love.
PS
Lol, with such stance, which SuperPower do I fit in? :)

I guess no one bothered to tell them that their Far God is already manifesting down south and the smart move might be to gtfo and get raptured? I mean I'm no expert in proper etiquette regarding first contact with alien deities, but it might be considered rude not to meet them halfway.

There is a huge rapture portal in HIP 22460. They only need to congregate there and hop in.

Stoking the flames amongst your society to do your bidding, Fed officials?

As Secretary of State Lana Berkovich put it: “Humanity is at war with the Thargoids. To allow an army of crazed alien sympathisers within our society is to invite disaster.”

...clearly these pacifists/fatalists are all crazy nut-jobs. Sounds like we should out-law their religion, all right! Yup. Uh huh. That'll do it.

Why do these morons open their mouths? Alas, it lures many to their causes. Just let the cultists continue sending themselves to their deaths, as they have been doing. What are you worried about? Feeding the Thargoids? Losing a bunch of bodies who could have served as your soldiers?
