GALNET - 24 DEC 3306 - Alliance Shelters New Marlinist Refugees

Tens of thousands of Marlinist refugees have claimed sanctuary in Alliance space, after emigrating from the Empire to avoid political persecution.

In recent weeks, there has been a steady stream of ex-Imperial citizens arriving at Alliance systems, mostly travelling aboard small private vessels or in the holds of cargo ships.

The humanitarian aid organisation Safeguard Interstellar reported that accommodation and basic necessities are being provided. Alliance Interpol is running stringent security checks for evidence that members of the NMLA terrorist group are present.

The initial wave of refugees, which fled to the Federation, are currently preparing to populate a number of independent colonies established by the Sirius Corporation. However, these systems cannot yet provide harbour to the continuing exodus of Marlinists from the Empire.

Prime Minister Edmund Mahon publicly welcomed the refugees, but there has been some dissent in the Alliance Assembly. Councillor Nakato Kaine, who is expected to be Mahon’s main rival in next year’s election, received widespread support for her views:

“Naturally, we must provide these poor people with emergency aid, but there are practical limits to our resources. It is not our responsibility to solve the Empire’s domestic issues, and we have seen the Federation pay the price for sheltering terrorists. The Alliance cannot end up as the dumping ground for other superpowers’ problems.”

Seems like the Alliance is actually smarter then the Fednecks and starts vetting those refugees from the start instead of just eating up their own anti-Imperial propaganda that everyone who's wanted by the Empire must belong to the 'good guys' until they blow up a starport killing thousands of innocents... 🤔

No because Eddies too busy poking the Thargoids.

I don't know if anyone else picked up not his tidbit:

Alliance election next year? New power play figure? Potential political intrigue? - Bring it!

This doesn't surprise me, I've got waterproof jackets that are smarter than fednecks.

disturbingly, now he's smiling, he looks less like a paedophile surveying a playground, and looks more like a normal bloke...

I'll believe it when I see it- and Mahon != Alliance- you could keep PP as it is because its you supporting Mahon directly.

Plus Arthur did hint FD are not touching PP for EDO, so having new powers is the eggnog powered crazy dreams.

Maybe thats what he wants?

Let's all take a moment to remember that this is the same alliance that wants to terraforn ammonia worlds just a few scant years after we've been introduced to the thargoids that probably already think that they belong to them. Not much brains in the Alliance high command it seems, as easy targets for terraforming are available, the galaxy is full of rocky terrestrials, water worlds and earth likes.

If we're talking "tens of thousands" of refugees, there's really no practical limit to the Alliance's resources in this matter. That's about 10-100 refugees per Alliance system, or less than the daily birth rate of any single one of the Alliance's top 30 largest systems. I'm guessing Kaine - unlike Mahon - is not from the "economic calculations" side of the Alliance, at least...

Colonia took in at least three times that many refugees just from the first Thargoid skirmishes, to a tiny settlement by superpower standards, and we did it without political controversy over whether wholeheartedly supporting people fleeing danger was the right thing to do.

Political intrigue rather than new Power, I expect - with the main Power communities being primarily loyal to the superpower and secondarily to their Power figurehead, if they added a new Alliance power then the Alliance Powerplayers would just go "ooh, we can split our overhead and distance-costs between two HQs now" and chomp up another twenty systems. It's just not set up to simulate intra-superpower disagreements either mechanically or thematically.

(Up until a few months ago, I'd assumed that Frontier had incorporated the Federal Republican-Liberal merger from Powerplay into the plot, since Winters basically hadn't done any actual opposition since 3301)
