Galnet Article Confirms Witch-Space = Hyperspace Tunnel

Hi all I've just read the latest Galactic News segment on Galnet giving a history on the hyperdrive, thus expanding a bit of lore and defining what is canon in ED.

7th January 3303 Galactic News: Hyperspace

Thought it was interesting and will put to bed some arguments around the forum regarding the nature of Hyperspace and Witch-space.

Basically it confirms that the tunnel we travel through is indeed witch-space.

Thoughts?

From all the stuff I've been reading up, and getting confirmation from Allen and Drew's posts, it appears that Witch-space is just a spacers term for Hyperspace. In other words, they were always the same thing (honest ;) ) but early users of Hyperspace started to call Witch-Space because it was spooky.

Some discussion here

Yeah it makes sense, and I've always seen it that way. But I've seen lots of discussions and comments on the forum disputing this, and it's never really been quite so clearly stated in the official lore before.

Interesting history on the hyperdrive though.

Same here. I've always used the terms interchangeably myself.

The interesting thing is that the Galnet article confirms another headcanon of mine: The FSD is a very recent invention, even later than I thought. It explains why people are willing to pay a huge premium for delivery by, or passage aboard, a Pilot's Federation ship. Most ships might still be using the older 2b Hyperdrives, which took a week to jump somewhere, and two weeks to get anywhere interesting in a system.

To me it seems like FD are finally trying to bring their lore in order. There was just too much confusion with old lore, and bits of it that were 'kinda cannon'. Or just plain guessing. There are so many conflicting opinions on what witch-space is, and we can finally put the arguments to rest.
The tunnel you see during FSD jump is a witch-space. At least now it most certainly is :)

Or rather, you call it a Witch-Space tunnel, and I call it a Hyperspace tunnel. We're both right, only one of us is using Space Slang and the other has just been reading the ship's manual too much... ;)

Manual needs updating then as page 76 was part of the cause of the debate

Manual Page 76 said:
Hyperspace Jumps

The frame shift drive can be activated to compress space to the point where ships can travel light-years in seconds, jumping from one star system to another in moments. Such travel is known colloquially as a hyperspace jump.

I am quite pleased it is again establishg that travel betwen stars is via a conduit through Hyperspace aka Witch Space, and travel in system is via the Space Compression of the Frame Shift drive.

I actually think the Modern quick Hyper Jumps is just using the FSD inside the Conduit of the 2b Drives, but that is just a personal theory using what we know of the lore, on how the old week long jumps became ~40 second long jumps

What's the logo above Empire in your sig?

Buckyball Racing Club. The group occasionally hosts amusingly themed races that tend to push the limits of flying, engineering, Supercruise travel, SRV driving, and other aspects of the game. One recent race I enjoyed immensely, and is relatively topical at the moment, was the ironically named "Kick the Alien (and run like hell).". Amusingly, the SRV race was less an SRV driving race than an SRV flying race.

hyperspace and witch-space being the same thing has always been the case in ED. they just need to run these "historical" news items more than once a year like they have been doing it seems. It was cleared up around release but the lack of any official repository for lore has just helped perpetuate misleading / wrong or now non-cannon beliefs/definitions.
