Galnet Audio: Human VO Actors - or - Text-to-Speech

Fairly simple question. Should GalNet Audio use humans voice-over actors or text to speech conversion?

1) Humans First! [yesnod]

2) Kill All Humans! [alien]

The first thing I wanted to know when I started using EDDI was how to turn off the galnet reader plug-in, even with high quality voice packs it's still incredibly annoying, if you haven't tried it you can't know how tedious it is.

Synthesized VO is always a bad idea for lenghty and articulated monologues.

That said, I never had anything to say against fdevs audio engineers, quite the contrary actually, so I'm still moderately hopeful.

I agree with you!
After a day of hard work, I just want to turn off the lights, flight my ship and enjoy peaceful music with some cosmic vistas.. Talking GalNet will not be welcome..
That will be very good for other players!, but not me..

There is no choice here. Text to speech is the only option. Nobody would pay actors to read weekly GalNet articles. That would cost a lot of money.

Or they simply use the staff already in their employ to do it? Why the need for actors?

Just because everybody has a voice doesn't mean everybody qualifies as a voice actor.
Unless you don't mind Galnet Audio coming across like a 6th grade stage play.
One of the things FD seem to take pride in is their audio design, and with good reason imo.
I'm not familiar with the quality of text to speech, but unless it's pretty darn convincing i can't see them go that way.
What about the station ATCs, i presume those are actual people who were recorded ?

Here's a curious alternative... Offer up the opportunity to read Galnet articles to the ED player community. Maybe some folks would cherish the opportunity. We might end up finding a couple of people in our ranks who would enjoy the limelight and also want to do it on a regular basis. Perhaps developing into some sort of regular radio news show with newscasters who become community celebrities - (kinda like Obsidian Ant does now). Maybe even result in a couple of competing news channels (CNN vs FOX). (If we could pretend that FOX "news" was actually news in the first place...)

ED could simply publish the text on a regular basis and these folks would then download the info, do the recordings, and send them back.

I'm not interested, but maybe some folks might be...

Or make it a mission: "Read todays Galnet Article" earn 10M credits. (Just kidding... sort of...)

Why not a mix?

Text to speech for mundane stuff - Top 10s and PP, I'm looking at you.
A mix of voices for more juicy items - it'd make them stand out more.

For the vast majority of the time text to speech (TTS) seems the only solution that would make sense.

Whilst I like the idea of crowdsourcing presenters to read them, the overheads of recording, reviewing, compressing and normalising, and distributing each and every article on GalNet seems like too heavy an overhead.

TTS, deploy once and use the text already available. And to be frank, I kind of like the idea of my ship narrating to me.

This could also give FDEV another store item, voice packs.
