GalNet - Beyond Power Play

GalNet has a tremendous, untapped potential I would like to throw out there.

GalNet is supposed to be our News Source, but it really doesn't contain much beyond some power play information and CG data.

It could very easily be adapted to carry Headline News - that is, to drive in-game meta-stories.

Information regarding the Guardian Ruins could easily still occupy a space in GalNet.
Information regarding the recently discovered alien sites could occupy a space as well.
Information about upcoming events, to get people into the regions of space where Things Might Happen, likewise.

It just seems terribly under-utilized, and I have to admit, I'm at a bit of a loss as to why.

I would really like it to sit next to something like Klingon Academy's library, too.

I'd like to see audio/video updates through Galnet as well. Also, when referring to some of the articles about factions at War, famine, etc., there's no link to them and they can't be searched on galaxy map. A lot still needs to be done to improve Galnet functionality. It's very barebones right now, not much more than a text window.

Here's a grand example of how well this could work:

As you may have discovered, or will discover, the Alien Ruins mission from Ram Tah has recently had the Completion Bonus cut by 90%.
This has resulted in one extremely long and growing complaint thread, probably several others that have had to be moderated away, and lots of sore bums.

And many not sore because of the change, but rather because they didn't know this change had/was happened/happening.

A simple GalNet Headline News entry "Ram Tah to reduce payout for Alien Ruins" would have prevented this - at least mostly. Of course there will always be complaining when something like this is changed, but at least then no one could say "Well nobody told me..."

Sure, this sort of thing gets posted in the forums, but the forums are not the game.
Sometimes this sort of things gets e-mailed in newsletters too, but newsletters are not the game.

GalNet is in the game.
Information that affects what is going on in the game needs to be in the game.
It's not that hard a concept to grasp.

This absolutely must be implemented.

Agree 100%
Unfortunately FD themselves still use the forums and newsletters to communicate in-game happenings.
I've never been a fan of how much of this game's story and events take place outside of the game itself.

Though I'd be fine with them still using the forums and newsletter to inform of major happenings if it was a supplement to what's already broadcast in the game.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Galnet could really use some TLC, it's true. I'd love to see way more lore present in the game and Galnet would be a good place to start adding it.

I think part of the reason we don't see more stuff in Galnet is that the pacing of FD's storytelling has slowed down a lot from what it was at launch. That just my subjective 2 cents.

I like the idea of a Codex, like in Dragon Age and Mass Effect. As you find out more, investigate and explore, data about ships and other fluff text gets added to your codex, including things like history, stats etc.

I've spent whole evenings just nosing through the Codexes (Codices?) in those Bioware games :)
