DISTANT THARGOID ENCOUNTER RAISES QUESTIONS

14 AUG 3309
An independent explorer has reported an unusual incident involving a Thargoid vessel, hundreds of light years away from the ongoing invasion.
Commander Renia Rakowski told her story to Vox Galactica:
“I’d been gathering exploration data for weeks without seeing another soul. Boring, I know, but I like a quiet life. As I jumped out of the Wregoe GA-X B3-0 system, my ship rocked violently and I panicked, thinking the hyperdrive had failed. I barely saw it at first, black against the black of space, until its outline glowed. A Thargoid interceptor. Just like on the newsfeeds, but right outside my canopy.”
“I’ve never been in combat before, and my ship carries no weapons anyway, so I thought this was the end of me. My heart was drumming as I stared at the alien, and it stared back like some giant lidless eye. A writhing light lashed out, this rasping howl came over the comms, and then… it left. I wasn’t dead, which was quite the surprise.”
“I watched it gliding away, its petals rotating and revolving, sort of beautifully I suppose. It actually turned its back on me, like I was some insignificant speck unworthy of attention. I’ve never been so glad to be boring.”
Commodore Emil Varga, the Alliance’s military liaison to Aegis, provided a follow-up statement:
“This incident took place a considerable distance from the Maelstroms. Initially, we feared this was evidence that new Titans had arrived and were performing a flanking manoeuvre. However, if the interceptor had been part of the invasion fleets, it would have opened fire immediately after hyperdiction occurred.”
“The immediate area around Wregoe GA-X B3-0 contains no barnacle sites or records of Thargoid activity that we’re aware of. Universal Cartographics confirmed we have some basic exploration data for that part of the Wregoe sector, but no previous Thargoid encounters. Civilians are warned to stay away from that region until we know more.”

Galnet continues the later in the day releases timings for new news... no PFA so not meant to be any in game content for this news...

I'm at work right now so I can't log into see where this is, anybody draw a picture of where this actually took place compared to where the war is located?

It is about 1.4k ly away from the war theater(I was in Gliese 2032 near Maelstrom Thor when I checked the distance), no nebulas anywhere near. HIP 36601 with the crystal shards is some 8-900 ly away.

The idea that this is not yet for players seems supported by me not finding anything so far, but I was coming out this way for raw materials eventually so was a good excuse to go looking.

Edit : I suppose there is the Cone nebula but you need a permit for that and it’s ~1.1k ly away too.

Perhaps since Aegis has decoded the full Thargoid strategic set up, rules of engagement and order of battle, and so can be confident of the tactics to be followed by a lone Interceptor well over 1500 LY from the main action, they should share it with the rest of us?

That said:
- to perform a flanking manouevre, your target needs to have flanks, which the bubble doesn't
- a Titan around that position heading for the bubble would probably come in pretty near Cocijo (the system is only about 300 LY from Cocijo's mean trajectory and most of the difference is vertical) which would make it more "reinforcing" than "flanking" as these things go.
- Titans are not exactly stealthy while moving so if the plan to spot new ones is "hope some random explorers get away" it may need rethinking

I suppose we're mainly on "Aegis making stuff up because they have no clue as to what's happening" still. Maybe Seo Jin-Ae can try to explain the advanced Thargoid concept of "a map" to them next.

Very roughly, Sag A* off top of page, Thargoid also quite a bit above the galactic plane compared with the bubble
Code:
...
*S* <- the bubble, war, maelstroms, etc
***

           .<-- the Thargoid

How far out from the bubble ? and in the direction of Colonia?

Bill

<<currently about 4000 ly out from Colonia with his fleet carrier and heavily armed bug killer 'vette

Away from Colonia and over a thousand from the Bubble. Up on the galactic plane too.

Not sure distance in itself matters for the Thargoids that much, though, to be honest.

Aegis: "Civilians are warned to stay away from that region until we know more."
Us: scan the area to smithereens.
Really, we are the only people capable of giving them the data to 'know more'. It is up to us to find out if there is a reason for the Thargoids to be there, or if they are passing through that area going to/from somewhere else.
Hoping that this is setting up an exploration CG later in the week.

Well, I just got 1st jump time of 19 minutes so going to go up over next couple of hours as everyone gets home (UK time, anyway) and all are fed up with no CG's for 3rd week running.

So I'm a little confused. I've been reading all the books to catch up on lore and just finished "Out of the darkness".
In there the Oresrians, or supposed friendly thatgoids, were slaughtering people in mass with no regard.

Not really. I entered Col 70 into galmap search and picked a random system - 634 ly. Suppose it’s ‘close’ in space terms, but not ‘close close’. Just under 500 to its edge.
Well, considering where FD might want this to go, that might be a good distance away, but then again they've been holding that area locked up since God knows when. Maybe it's time to go flood that area with explorers.
