Galnet News 10 DEC 3306 v2 - Sirius Corporation Campaign to Establish Marlinist Colonies

Pilots Federation ALERT

Commodities are requested to create new settlements for Marlinist refugees who fled from the Empire to the Federation.

Sirius Corporation has offered to resolve the current standoff between superpowers by establishing colonies where the refugees can live independently.

Li Yong-Rui, CEO of Sirius Corporation, summarised his proposal:

“It is clear that the Marlinists cannot return to the Empire, and are a destabilising presence within the Federation. We offer an alternative by constructing permanent habitats for their population. These will be self-governed and may freely trade with the galactic community.”

“Sirius cannot stand by while the risk of interstellar war increases. I sincerely hope this leads to a more stable and profitable period for us all.”

After intense debate, both Congress and the Senate accepted the proposal, with the proviso that any refugees identified as NMLA members will be returned to the Empire.

Dr Jenna Fairfax, a Marlinist community leader, also offered her approval:

“We were forced to abandon our entire lives because of our political beliefs. This at least gives us a chance to have homes again.”

Traders are asked to deliver atmospheric processors, auto-fabricators, structural regulators and water purifiers to Ellis Gateway in the Bd+05 1146 system. From there, the Omega Merchant Command will distribute resources for the colonisation of up to ten uninhabited systems.

Haha this totally sounds like the Weyland-Yutani Corporation setting up a colony. I bet these colonists will be asked to investigate some suspicious Thargoid relic/ship/base...

I really thought that these new Marlinist systems would all be located in the Witch Head Nebula.

Damn it's like they read my post from the last thread.

Stick the refugees in a generation ship and send them to the thargoids with a massive tin opener.

It'll be win-win:
  • No one wants the refugees
  • It'll act as compensation for the relentless provocation, persecution & now threat of terraforming the homeworlds of the peaceful thargoids; a race of farmers & artists that only act in self defence.

Mmmmm. I wonder how much the Fednecks paid Sirius to get shut of 'em. Sounds like the Fednecks are too chicken to start a war with the Empire. ;)
Hudson can't hear you over the blaring Fednex Cotton Eye Joe music, as he parties like a boss....

That's assuming it was the Feds idea. I wouldn't be surprised if some back room deal happened between Sirius, Feds and Imps to curtail this. Because peace is a better for business and trade right now, given the Thargoid threat looming just outside the bubble. Espcially with the Alliance poking the Thargoids with a sharp stick right now.

I love the Alliance but boy do they do some stupid s*!t on occasion.

So, what's my take on this?

a) Sirius is about to set up the Marlinists and their republic as a fourth power. I'm not content to use the term "superpower" yet as those max 10 systems are not that impressive in comparisson to the Fednecks, the Empire or even the Alliance, but it's certainly more then most minor factions control.

b) That provisio. I kinda doubt that that the NMLA will be overly fond of the moderate Marlinists for "selling them out" by agreeing to hand them over to the Empire to secure their independence. I expect some retaliation from them against all four parties involved: The Empire because they hate it anyway, the Federation for interfering with them yet again despite the bombing of Kepler Orbital, Sirius for getting involved and slowing down their djihad against the Empire and, like I said before, the moderate Marlinists for agreeing to all of this.

Interesting positions - within the bubble, though on the fringes.

Since LYR is in the Club, he's essentially making these people coal mine canaries for Thargoids.
Maybe. They are in a position where if the Thargoids overran Witch Head and Pleiades and came for the bubble from there, these systems would probably be targets geographically ... but no more so than thousands of others.

“Sirius cannot stand by while the risk of interstellar war increases.
Naturally not, although I don't immediately see how this will further escalate the situation.

Of course, if you think LYR and Isolde Rochester are both club operatives it's possible that the intent is to take some pressure of the Federal Liberals with the intent of getting a more compliant President some time down the line. Best justification I can think of for this right now.

The other (no less interesting) theory is that LYR is strengthening his credentials as a neutral peace-broker- I mean, where is Mahon in all this, he is normally the one who pops up and wags a finger at the naughty children.
