GalNet news in Cockpit?

Wouldn't it be a nice addition to make the GalNet news (not necessarily traffic and market reports, since they are very station specific) available in the cockpit of our ships while we are flying? This would give those who are overly bored in Super Cruise some nice value while traveling far distances. It also wouldn't reduce the incentives to dock on stations, since the news are only lore related and stations would still be imperative to accept missions, buy ship upgrades and to stock up their cargo etc

I for one would like this, especially the ability to see/buy trade data for any given station. I'm not talking about the "EXPORTED TO" rubbish, more like actual numbers.

There is a longer video showcasing it in my 4rth or so reply.

Please note that that only works if Frontier starts updating the Galnet News website again. I've been made aware of a blogspot page aggregating the in-game news, so I'll modify the script to allow that as secondary news source, but that might take a couple of days because Life.

That's exactly what I think should not be available in cockpit, since it's a gameplay mechanic. GalNet news are only flavour texts, so adding them to the cockpit menu wouldn't require any balancing afterwards.

In contrast to many other commanders here I am totally fine with need to dock at stations to get market information. Being able to access those from normal in flight menus would just exclude many stations from trading runs and make trading much more boring than it is (the need to actually find good market prices by docking and manually analyzing the local market information makes it a little like a detective game where you have to gather valuable information yourself - much better then to let the game just tell you "go there, buy this here and sell that over there" and than just follow the instructions)

Actually, it makes game sense for you to have to dock at stations to get prices (or at least updates).
We as pilots are the fastest things in the Universe! (well other than the edge of the universe itself when it started)
If we think about electomagnetic comms, it's all at the speed of light which we easily surpass on our dashes as the 0.1 c (Super Cruise) going up to 9,000c when we jump between star systems (Frame Shift Device).
FTL comms is possible from an answer another thread had, but it appears to be very large/expensive/restriced.

So to get updates in the cockpit Galnet or Trade data would to me be stretching the setting logic too far.

Considering that the Galnet news are changing every 24 hours or so it does make sense (worldlore wise) to be able to read them in flight. You could have downloaded them automatically when you last docked.
Trade Data, on the other hand, don't make sense on a worldlore basis and would quite certainly unbalance the system.

Normally I am a strict enemy against everything that might break realism and immersion in the game, but in this case I think your logic doesn't necessarily apply. If humankind finds a way to accelerate solid vessels to a speed many times of the speed of light, I think we can assume they found a way to transfer energy based transmissions at least as fast.

No, I think in this case we shouldn't try to explain or disprove the possibility of FTL transmissions and rather add GalNet news for the sake of fun to the cockpit menu. There are real authors producing those texts, so I think it's safe to assume it would be good that their fictional in game news reach as many players as possible. Right now they are not placed prominently enough, in that small sub menu in the station's UI.

Not to mention those of us who are light years away from the nearest station on exploration runs will be out of the loop for potentially days or weeks for the really hardcore explorers. It would be nice to keep tabs on what's happening back home without having to wait for the email newsletter :)

They should.

This was the way GalNet news was setup back in the days of Elite: Frontier and FFE. Not sure why they changed it so much it was good concept.
