GALNET: NEWS! Really NEWS ?

We have hundreds maybe thousands of occupied systems in the game and therefore I would expect to see on GALNET news every day, maybe several times a day.

But instat the latest NEWS on GALNET is used to be several days old.
Come on... this is far from being intersting.

Where is the "living" galaxy?

Definitely could all do with an improvement. Keep in mind local system news is normally confined to the 'local newspaper reports' in each station. Only major events reach galnet.

I rarely read any of those local reports until someone pointed out that you have to scroll quite far down to find the hidden stuff, can't remember which one, away from the computer right now, it's the gazette or something like that.

Current latest Galnet reports are from Saturday.

Forums? :)

I prefer they start putting out news of better quality (that can be used to find something fun without Reddit support) instead of rolling out dozens that would be even more useless.

The gazette's and couriers etc. are fun to read. I've heard there are some news there that are hand written but I only found quite impressing auto generated news about the changes in the BGS.

Herald. :)

Anyway, personally I find expectations that galnet should have multiple interesting stories every day exactly the kind of stuff that is bound to cause disappointment. Sure, things can be improvement but with those expectations nothing will suffice.

At the very least Galnet should be bursting with Thargoid related content. Panic in system X. reaction from powers, superpowers other characters (be honest its been limited), calls to arms from xeno-extremists, calls to peace by the anti-xenocidalists, something ANYTHING. Not even a tired old CG this week and almost radio silence on Galnet.

Recall the Lugh conflict? That probably got more coverage than the Thargoid threat so far. Unless the silence is itself a story telling device indicating the complacency of humanity... that is doubtful. Too little butter spread over too much bread. As each week passes 2.4 is getting increasingly underwhelming as my hope for more wanes.

But he's right. It would be counterproductive. There are no search or grouping tools in Galnet so the important news would be lost under all the immersive spam.

Gawd, some people speak like they're in FD's payroll…

I wish. Arguing for money might be quite boring work in long term though.

I would improve local news templates though. Current ones serve their purpose, but quality and variety leaves a lot to be desired.

Not defending Galnet, it is a bit pants at the moment. Still I'm not quite sure what you are asking for? 24 hrs CNN coverage, repeating the same thing every 15 mins? That pretty much sums up mainstream media today. recycling the same thing with the headline 'BREAKING NEWS'

Here are the last two Galnet articles.

28 OCT 3303

Admiral Aden Tanner, Aegis’s chief military liaison, has addressed reports of capital ships being destroyed by the Thargoids.

“Although the shutdown field neutraliser developed by Aegis is capable of protecting small ships, we have encountered difficulties adapting the technology to larger spacecraft. Furthermore, the fact that Thargoids tend to target larger vessels with multiple shutdown beams simultaneously makes the task of protecting them more difficult.”

“The fact that capital-class ships are more vulnerable to Thargoid attack means they are an ineffective way of protecting outposts, planets and shipping lanes. Consequently, for the present, the deployment of capital ships is not considered an effective defence strategy.”

 Galactic News: Analysis from the Galaxy’s Most Powerful

28 OCT 3303

A number of the galaxy’s most powerful figures have commented on the current galactic landscape, addressing issues such as the return of Thargoids and the recent discovery of outposts formerly occupied by the Intergalactic Naval Reserve Arm.

At a society event in the Cubeo system, Princess Aisling Duval said:

“I read the INRA records, and frankly I was sickened. How could they treat living creatures that way? I’ve heard of governments inventing threats to support their military programmes. Maybe that’s what the INRA was. A smokescreen.”

Duval was ushered away from reporters by her publicist before she could say any more.

Senator Denton Patreus, who has spent little time in the public eye since his defeat of the insurgent organisation Emperor’s Dawn, made the following statement on the ‘Galaxy Now’ programme:

“I have reviewed much of the available intelligence on the Thargoids, and it is clear that we are facing a formidable threat. Granted, we do not know the reasons for their hostility, but in my experience such details are rarely important – what’s important is knowing where and when to strike.”

“The formation of Aegis is in my view a sound strategy, and represents a sensible response to this threat. Furthermore, I know Aden Tanner well, and I wholeheartedly believe he is the right man to be guiding Aegis’s military strategy.”

Li Yong-Rui, CEO of the Sirius Corporation, also offered an appraisal of the situation:

“If there’s one thing these INRA logs make plain, it’s that humanity is capable of defeating the Thargoids, especially when we work together. And remember, most of the galaxy is functioning exactly as it always has, despite the presence of these alien aggressors. So let’s maintain some perspective, shall we?”

There's nothing wrong with GalNet. Issue is people who are just tabbing trough interface just to ASAP get to next point aren't really playing game and thus for them even opening separate interface of GalNet feels wrong. That's why they designed GN Audio.

Overall I think blame lies elsewhere - there's not a lot environmental story telling outside interesting POIs. There's no NPC chitchat, some NPCs running around screaming. There have been some attempts from FD to address that, but I suspect it has been followed by lot of complains how NPCs flood local comms. It is interesting problem to solve.

On Reddit probably.

I want irl community talkshow hosts presenting the news and other fun stuff on Galnet. Maybe also some radio channels. Like Coast to Coast AM. That would be a fantastic service!

No, the issue is that there isn't enough to report on. Be honest, we're now heading towards two months of 2.4 and so far we've basically had a few variants of a USS. I am pretty sure things will ramp up quite dramatically :)cool:), but the complaints that 2.4 so far is boring are perfectly legit. The solution, however, is not to report more on the limited content, but to have more content.

Gawd, some people speak like they're in FD's payroll…

Gawd, some people cant discuss a game without resorting to baseless ad-hominems...

Sigh, yes I of course mean a 24 hours breaking news cycle. Reductio ad absurdum.

I gave a specific example of when it was done well (Lugh) and how what is happening how does not compare. What about the 27th? then a break back to the 21st, and before that.... it is very thin.

(me looks back in time machine month ago and then three weeks ago) not really. People have been excited about Thargoids and checking content for a month. 2.4 boring so far? Not so much. Most likely expectations not met for some commanders, but that's given considering we knew like NOTHING about this update.

We mostly build up ourselves and then blame others for not hitting that high mark of our dreams. That's human nature.

Read GalNet TODAY and learn what Reddit posted yesterday! Or last week...
Sure, but Reddit isn't exactly place where casuals get their news.

Riiiiight. I was in the pleiades when 2,4 launched and it was packed with cmdrs. Its almost back to 2.3 levels because 'some cmdrs' realize there is nothing to do beyond the first few hours of content. What exactly are you doing there, right now, that is so amazingly exciting that 'some of us' have missed? The anti-lockdown thingy has been useful for exactly one time for me, when I was hyperdicted, and in reality I could have just let it freeze me. The 'content' of the last three weeks saved me a whoppin' 30 seconds, thats it. Cool man! Amazing!

Its totally irrelevant we knew nothing, what is relevant is that so far we've got just a USS. Most of us are not entertained for months by a USS. Pretty much everyone agrees that stuff needs to happen to get things going, except apparently you who feels this has been amazeballs. Yes, I am, to repeat, confident cool stuff will happen. But thats no excuse to white knight the meager content of 2.4 so far. Honestly, if this was SC you'd be complaining the heck out of it, but now its ED you'll defend this hill to the end...
