Galnet News: The sorry fate of Hank Stone

So the news tells us that they found his abandoned Sidewinder in a Hanger and it contained a small fortune in raw gold. They mention the system he had been in and I guess this is designed to start a mining gold rush in that system.

The first thing that hit me and I'm guessing many CMDR's is "you cant fit a small fortune in gold in a Sidewinder" Even a Cobra would cost more than the Sidewinder filled with gold.

The whole game is full of stuff like this

To me this story indicates that the people writing this stuff don't actually play the game. They would be far better off getting a dedicated backer/beta tester to write this stuff.

[redacted]

The point... oh my, does it have to be spelt out.

The point of this post is to mark out a system to miners where a good source of Gold could be found.

[Edit - Yes, I see afterwards that you did get the point but you still felt compelled...? Yes, you can go buy gold in plenty of places, but some people like mining?]

I suppose this begs the question - can you readily identify good mining sites in-game without visiting and sampling some of the rocks?

I tried mining once and all I found was bauxite. Total profit of 765Cr. Not doing that again.

Yes, you can identify potential *good* mining sites from afar with scanning. But to see if they're *awesome* mining sites, you have to do some prospecting. It goes something like this:

1. Get a decent long range ship with a nice blend of range, cargo space and maneuverability. This usually means an Asp, or a T6, which is what I use.
2. Outfit said ship with high-end exploration and mining gear. Meaning Fuel scoop, Advanced Scanner, Surface Scanner, high-grade refinery and large cargo racks.
3. Go into the unknown.
4. Scan systems.
5. Look for Pristine Reserves (pretty much everything a 100ly out from inhabited space is untouched) Metallic planetary rings.
6. Land in the ring and begin prospecting. This generally involves taking a statistically meaningful sample of rocks. My method is to sample 60 asteroids in a given belt; if an asteroid contains Gold, Palladium or Platinum in concentrations of more than 20%, one point is added. If it contains said ores in less than 15%, half a point is added. If it contains concentrations of more than 40%, two points are added. If it contains concentrations of Platinum greater than 50%, three points are added.
7. Divide final tally with 60. Enter said number together with location data into a spreadsheet.

Continue your search until you find Eldorado, which is anything with a final score of 0.8 or greater. Then get filthy rich.

While mining is a bit rough for the time being, you can do quite some money with it especially in the beginning. Just look for metallic rings ( preferrably pristine resources) and you have a high probability to to mine gold, silver, platinum and palladium.

My second ship (after the sidewinder) was an adder, which I fitted for mining and gave me the fastest route to earn 2 Mio to be able to buy a decent Cobra. Once you have a ship with enough cargo space, mining is no longer as profitable in terms of Cr/hr.

Especially for fresh starters, this site mentioned in the news can be quite worthwhile to follow.

Thanks, that's useful information!

And by coincidence, I started out on an exploration trip a couple of days ago. I dropped into a ring system about 200Ly from civilisation for some sightseeing and saw a miner plus escorts. Perhaps he did have the right idea. :)

I might give it another go when I get back.

Wow, you people complain about everything. When I read the story I really liked the personal touch and that we get to hear of the fate of some individuals, nicely incorporating a hint that the mentioned system might be of interest to miners.

Instead, the first thing you do is complaining that a sidewinder full of gold is not worth much... so what? It's even called a "small fortune" and might indeed have been worth a lot to this poor individual, Hank Stone.

I went straight there yesterday when the news broke on galnet of poor hanks fate.. I scan the system and checked the mining potential for gold but found nothing..I bumped into a couple prospectors but they also found nothing worth mining for

You know, one day you're going to actually say something complimentary to someone on these forums Anthony. I have a bottle of champaigne on hand for the big event.

Thanks for the insight. Nice system you have there.

The real story is what has happened to Hank Stone?

I bet its not

4 tons of gold is still more of a fortune than 4 tons of aluminium.

lol
If its not a fortune it cant be more of a fortune
