As this is a suggestion thread i'll pitch this in a ideal world scenario and then break it down into how I think this would be achievable.
The idea is to have a Fallout 3/4 style radio station that players would be able to listen to on their travels within the Elite universe. This would ideally all be within the context of the universe, play the latest GalNet News updates and possibly music from the Elite setting, think Mr Universe in firefly, totally independent and unbiased. Now we could just run this via third party tools like a podcast, but in an ideal world it would be accessible through an in game option in the systems menu.
Ideal world (most likely out of scope and budget of FD):
Totally voice acted FD managed radio station.
Real world approach:
Community run, community managed radio.
The idea would be that at the end of each week/month players submit audio files for moderation by trusted community members, who review and collate the best radio shows and approve them for upload at FD discretion. The recordings could be anything from simple newsreel style GalNet updates, to full on in universe game shows, SRV race commentary/sports standings or whatever the community comes up with.
The best updates for the following week are cycled into a loop of the past few weeks submissions. As new submissions are added old ones are filtered out. Keeping the reel fairly up to date and server loads down. We would only need an hour of content (including music between announcements), just something players can tune into to get the latest goings on in the verse then tune out.
Over time players could go to the forum and rate certain broadcasters and trusted broadcasters would be more likely to make it through the review process again.
In-between updates you could play either open sourced music, stock ED music or community sourced music.
Now obvious pitfalls are:
Lack of content, a slow week might mean no news is pushed through, in this case continue the old loop, players aren’t forced to listen with the opt in station.
Reliance on the community:
A) The moderators would have to listen to each user submission, this obviously takes time and dedication of a handful of people to moderate in their own time. But as a lot of people like to listen to podcasts ect as they fly this will be similar.
B) Broadcasters would have to keep it clean. Keep it in universe and keep it relatively short (think fallout 4s short breaks in between music). Again this relies on peoples own free time to come up with the content.
FD would likely have to put a notice in game that the broadcast is community run and they are not responsible for content, though if the moderation system works then we shouldn’t have any issues.
As mentioned above, we could run this using third party tools like a podcast but for greatest reach an in game option would be better (even if it just links to a webpage that runs in the background streaming it).
You can’t stop The Signal!
