SEO JIN-AE: ‘THE THARGOIDS KNOW WE’RE COMING’

04 MAY 3309
A warning about entering the Maelstroms has been offered by Seo Jin-ae, whose unique cortical implant offers glimpses into the Thargoid hive mind.
Aden Tanner, who is currently working with Aegis, released a personal statement:
“Seo Jin-ae approached me in a state of distress shortly after the first tests of the Thargoid pulse neutraliser. She claimed that, as the probes passed through Taranis’s energy wave, she perceived a change among the Thargoid voices. ‘Like being woken up by insect bites,’ was how she described the sensation.”
“‘The Thargoids aren’t as oblivious to our tests as it sometimes seems,’ she told me. I pressed her for more details, but there was only one thing she was convinced about: ‘They understand we’ve found a way to push deeper into the Maelstrom. They know we’re coming.’”
“Now, this might mean nothing at all, and it’s not verifiable data. But it prompted Professor Tesreau to pass on Seo’s concerns to the superpowers. Likewise, I feel a sense of duty to share this with the galactic community. Any pilots who plan to explore the Maelstrom cores should not assume that they’ll have the element of surprise.”
Vice Admiral Skylar Anderson, the Empire’s military liaison to Aegis, commented:
“I have personally reviewed all recent tactical reports, but found no evidence of any changes in the Thargoids’ behaviour or strategy. We are proceeding with our plans to mass-produce the Thargoid pulse neutraliser and send crewed ships into the Maelstroms. Tanner’s concern is noted, however, and we urge extreme caution in these early expeditions.”

So yeah, that confirms my idea of Seo directly pulling information from the hivemind, rather than acting as a comms translator.

I could say [more] stuff about reasons for not going into Maelstroms, but I would hope everyone who does comes adequately prepared and not in a paper boat.

Yep, I wonder what the anti-mothership meta will be. I do hope it turns out to be Sidewinders.

"The battle station is heavily shielded and carries a firepower greater than half the star fleet. Its defenses are designed around a direct, large-scale assault. A small one-man fighter should be able to penetrate the outer defense."

That would take the Swarm to a whole new level. (Isn’t that how AXI dubbed taking on a Hydra with like a bunch of Sidewinders or some other small ship?)

Crazy theory: what if the aliens that created technology so advanced that we can barely understand it, capable of traversing an eldritch dimension we can barely even fathom, that have been responding to all our military attacks on them-

might be intelligent?

Anyway, back to collecting the free shinies that their obviously inert and unmonitored bases hand out :)

All credit to Seo Jin-ae for her work as the only competent person on the team, especially as she'd clearly rather be relaxing on a beach somewhere instead, but really Aegis should not need her to be saying this stuff to figure it out.

We sent a bunch of probes in, they got past the energy defence, the Thargoids then destroyed them by some other means before they could return any other useful data. They should be assuming up front that a species capable of spaceflight and other advanced technology has an understanding of the concepts of "inside" and "outside" at least equal to our own.

Really, now? Because there has been, and since you sent the probes in. There's no evidence of it being a direct response to the probes - it wasn't even at the same Maelstrom - but it still should have been obvious on your reports.

I would’ve more said something along the lines of it - obviously - being a focus for the Thargoids to ensure the defense of their, for all intents and purposes, forward operating bases, rather than change their strategy on a grand level immediately. Plus other probes were said to have been sent into the other Maelstroms too, for further testing, but clearly that wasn’t part of this report.

Oh, but then you’d have to actually admit that two genocide attempts within two centuries maybe was a mistake. And that stealing their stuff then declaring war when inevitable reprisal occurs was dumb. Or that human supremacy in the face of a species many times more advanced is a fool’s ideal. We can’t have that, can we?

To be fair, the Thargoids do appear to be highly inscrutable, to the point where it's hard to tell if they have the kind of individual mentality we expect of humans. They seem quite unfazed by the huge amount of their ships we've been blowing up, almost as if they're as disposable as immune cells are in the human body.

The ships are very likely manned by drones, and codex states they are seen as entirely disposable by the queens(which are sentient/sapient, while the drones are not), with as much attention paid to one’s death as a human would to the loss of an eyelash.

Relies on the assumption that ships are seen similarly by them, though, which I don’t think has been stated(or documented in-universe).

I'm awaiting the appearence of more thargoid maelstroms.... just to remind us of how <insert favourite rude word> we are
To be honest , I'm surprised how passive the thargoid attacks are..... and how they're not doing hit and run assaults deep into the bubble aimed at economic and military targets in order to disrupt our supply lines , destroy our industrial base, and scare the living daylights out of the population.

Well that, and until we do something new they won't. Their pattern has been to see what we do first, then react with the next bit of weirdness that we have to figure out.

Yes, it looks to be shaping up to that classic trope in MMO narrative arcs, "Oh no, some of the players foolishly chose the only available option."
If there is another option, Frontier certainly haven't been particularly obvious about it. Story's pretty railroaded as it is(whether that is a good or bad thing, decide for yourself), and everything points to having to brute force our way through protective barriers to get to the Maelstroms.

In the FSL #29 stream, they (Arf specifically) said there will be something that we have to find oin our own with no hints on their part, other than their statemnt to that effect...

Would have been nice if the maelstrom probes had been able to provide the footage of the new thargoid ship, instead of the faux "signal" that delivered the footage during the middle of the frameshift live broadcast.
