GALNET UPDATE 03.12.3306 - Explorer CG info

Pilots Federation ALERT

Sirius Atmospherics has requested help from independent pilots to provide exploration data focusing on ammonia worlds for terraforming purposes.

The subsidiary of Sirius Corporation is working in partnership with the Alliance to establish colonies within the Coalsack Nebula, and to identify sites of commercial and scientific interest.

Dr Maximilian North, Sirius Atmospherics’s project director, outlined the requirements:

“We have developed revolutionary new terraforming procedures for terrestrial planets with ammonia-based atmospheres. Our collaboration with the Alliance is the perfect opportunity to try and put these to practical use, with the goal of transforming the region into a more human-friendly place.”

“Sirius Atmospherics offers rewards for explorers who can provide us with exploration data. We are particularly interested in detailed scans focusing on the composition of ammonia worlds, not just in the Coalsack Nebula but elsewhere. Gathering wide-ranging data will enable us to determine the most suitable targets for environmental conversion.”

Pilots are requested to deliver exploration data to the Sirius Atmospherics research facility at Betancourt Base in the Musca Dark Region PJ-P b6-1 system.

OH! This is a CG I can certainly get on board with! I must be a secret Thargoid as I like Ammonia worlds more than ELW's in general (although have found a few ELW's that, technically, should have been Ammonia worlds!) so will fire up FC "Famine" ("Pestilence" is in Colonia) for a few jumps out to one of my favourite hunting grounds 👍
(I need the credits to complete the FC set on my other 2 accounts...)

You'd think one day humanity might learn...

But then I don't trust Sirius at all, they have more fingers in more pies that just about anyone else in this game. I'm really torn between testing this new mechanic, and not helping Sirius out. But then I could help start the ground war with the Thargoids, and run back out to the void again

Terraforming a lifeless HMC with an ammonia-based atmosphere is one thing - though with millions of planets in the galaxy terraformable with existing technologies, a minor practical breakthrough only. It should be quite clear from the data being collected by Sirius, however, that they wish to use this technology to drastically change the atmospheric composition of - and therefore sterilise - life-bearing ammonia worlds which are too far outside the habitable zone to ever be useful for human habitation.

No ethical explorer should support this extinctionist approach - we have seen too many times throughout human history, in Tau Ceti, Achenar, Lave and many other places, that humans cannot safely coexist with existing planetary life, and therefore the Colonia Ethical Settlement Committee has rejected plans for any more than scientific monitoring of inhabited planets here - but to plan to deliberately wipe it out is a step further even than that, and one which must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

This will be fun to watch, I can’t for one minute see the Thargoids being to chuffed with this.

Time to start building that Thargoid anti Basilisk ship then....

And this is the struggle I'm having. My main character has never hurt or tried to attack any kind of Thargoid, even down to the scavengers and eggs in the structures... Every fibre of my lore being knows that Sirius are a terrible company with heavy links to INRA and Aegis.

But then there's me, who welcomes the first try to change Explorations CGs since they were added to the game, and wants to help test the mechanics...

Feeling a bit torn

Now what FD should do with the morality aspect is have a Galnet piece outlining the conundrum from the different viewpoints.

What an extremely well thought through initiative! An exploration with a time table of 7 days..... I'm in the back of Lyra's Song now. And yes I've found plenty of ammonia worlds. But I won't be heading back any time soon. I'm 31k lys away from civilazation. If I'd started non stop jumping now my guestimate would be 2 days non stop (roughly 5 minutes calculated per jump: refueling/ some more explo on the way and repairs calculated with that). Thanks for this great initiative.
