There are a few details I'm missing before I could offer a clear verdict myself.
What exactly happened to those who were inslaved?
As far as I know, they had to mine out minerals and were promised some payday eventually for their work? Maybe they were threatened for not complying and possibly destroyed? Seems like the jig would be up fairly quickly after one or two guys spoke up about their treatment if the players (slaves) involved had an IQ above room temperature. Supposedly, there were kids involved and maybe there were discord shenanigans said kids were involved in as well but that's all strictly rumor mill territory for me.
What's going to happen to slaves after being "freed"?
Are they being compensated in any way? Did the slavers loan them money to get a ship that was more efficient at mining (like a python or something) as opposed to some out of the box DBS? Will the spoils of the slavers be divided up to slaves?
Discord shenanigans?
I would like to see some proof here, but apparently, they got the slaves to go to a discord to instruct them how to mine (Say what you will about these slavers, at least they taught folks a valuable skill they'll probably use in this game at some point). I've been seeing claims about racist and bigoted language in the slaver's personal discord which I can believe with the caveat that,
personal discords are filled with all kinds of adult content and humor and there's assuredly grounds for things to be taken out of context given the situation. I can completely understand if a media group or gaming news site shined a light onto said content in relation to there being a
player-run slave ring that it might not look good for FDEV. For that purpose, that makes the decision to ban the players from the open and private games make sense to me even if I think players should be able to enslave others if the other players are foolish enough or (if it's your fetish or whatever) to be enslaved on purpose.
If it's kosher to mindless murder players for no other reason than your enjoyment, I think you should have the less violent option to enslave them as well if you're sly enough or if the player in question wants to be enslaved.
From what I've seen, the sticking point for FDEV is the "scamming" aspect of it along with the Discord shenanigans, which I understand, but I'm not sure if the punishment fits crime if all they did was trick some gullible players into mining for them while being edgy boys in a discord.

But the new player experience might be ruined if they get abducted!
Personal opinion here, getting shanghai'd and hauled off to some distant system, managing to escape/or be rescued makes for a much more compelling player-driven narrative than-

just fly around and deliver mail or peck at ships in a Hi-rez zone until you have enough credits to buy a bigger ship.
Not that being enslaved is necessarily a better way to start out a game but without an actual narrative for players to adhere to you're going to get people drawn into these kinda situations.
