Newcomer / Intro Galnet???

This way sound like a silly question but is there a purpose to the Galnet news articles at stations?? Am I missing something?

Some of them are just providing back-story and immersion. Some of them are fan/player submitted.

However some let you know about upcoming Community Goals that you can take part in, or let people know about discounts available as a result of past CGs. Some of the Galnet articles are amusing - such as the "bug" which caused the FNS Nevermore to get into a firefight with the Hudson Dock, or the Code group attacking another Farragut vessel and forcing it to retreat. No doubt when Powerplay comes in the next release, Galnet articles will be even more important to keep an eye on.

And then, you have all the fuss about the Unknown Artifacts and the conspiracy theories related to them.

Apparently so

The Galnet is your link to the information about what is happening in the galaxy, with regard to both player and NPC activity. You can play ED without ever reading it, as I suspect you may have been doing, but if you want to learn about the games lore and participate in the games faction/power struggle the Galnet is where you find out what's going on.
As was mentioned, right now, finding out about community goals is the only real practical use, but I'm reasonably sure that with the release of Powerplay (update 1.3) the Galnet will play a larger role in how players interact with the greater galaxy.
