Game feels like its still a year from release.

Is it just me or does this game feel woefully incomplete and in places badly thought through?

I've been playing on/off since beta, enough to have traded up to a Type 9, so I'm not one to have just logged in for a few hours before giving this opinion.

At the very minimum, before release I would have expected:

Map and Navigation to work properly, basic ease of use (favorite systems, search by type/size e.t.c.) to have been implemented.

More depth to combat. This is a thread on it's own but combat in this game feels very shallow.

Incentives to actually play in open play/solo (I always play open, but really, for trading in particular, there is no real incentive to play in open when you can take the cash from solo straight into open)

More depth to factions/missions. This is probably the biggest here, other than a few bits of fluff and a few ships, the factions are identical. They behave the same, talk the same, act the same.
Hell, a lot of the core systems I've been in don't even have a description. Permit systems, not even a few lines of description.
The universe just feels extremely bland as it is.

Interdiction mechanics are extremely rushed, they don't work very well and will need to be redone somehow.

Ships all very samey to fly, even going from a Sidey to a Type 9, I expected a very different experience piloting them, really, other than turning a bit slower, they are identical.
On the same thought, ship customisation is extremely limited, its pretty much only the guns that are different on most of the better pilot's builds that I've seen. Other than that, there aren't too many choices really.

Collision mechanics are terribad. I don't know what else to say. I've had full speed/boost collisions with players and npcs that haven't even taken my shields down, then I've had other collisions at 1/2 - 1/4 the speed, with smaller ships that have wiped out my type 9 entirely.

Incentives to do anything other than trade. I can make easily 6mil+ taking it easy trading with little risk. I can't see a way to come close to that in any other profession.
With nothing else really worth aiming for other than money, there is no incentive to do anything else, which again means more people in solo mode.

Basic storage/transportation facilities. Why can't I store or transport modules?

There are lots of little bits and quite a few big bits to go before before this game gets anywhere near what I would call a 'release state'. It still feels like very early beta
to me.

Don't get me wrong, what we have here feels like a good foundation to a game, but it doesn't feel to me like it has anywhere near the content or depth or functionality that it should have had on release.
I kinda want to keep playing it, but when it comes down to it, the game just feels repetitive and not enjoyable. Even the combat is repetitive enough that this soon after release, its already getting tedious.

I'm really hoping there are a lot of these features just round the corner, but as it stands, without major improvements fairly quickly I can see this game becoming a ghost town, after all we know that
once people stop playing a game, its rare for them to come back. Even with StarCitizen around the corner as an alternative, I would still like to see E:D do well.

Thoughts?

It's not just you... this is basically the Alpha with a few more features rolled out.

I can think of so many things that are missing from the game that it would probably fill an entire page of paper neatly handwritten, flipped over, and handwritten again on the back.

No big deal, it's probably 4 years from being FULLY realized with all it's potentials used. Just enjoy the ride.

That's why there are so many flames on forum, many people are frustrated with that path: "enthusiasm -> fun -> hype -> wall of disappointment". So I totally agree, but there is a lot of such topics on a forum.

And there is one more factor: FD marketing. It is factory to produce disappointed people...

Well, it is basically still Gamma. Nothing significant has changed from that state feature wise. Only time will tell, lets hope its not TOO long. I really want to see this game expand.

Exactly, enjoy the ride. I look forward to this games evolution.

There is so much to do out there I can't believe people are bored. And it's so much more than mining/missions/trading.....so much more.

If you can't see that then I feel for you. Good luck.

I'd say I agree with the rest of your post, but I cannot, in good conscience, agree with that. All ships I've flown have a very distinct character to them, they fly, feel, fight and sound different.

Well its not quite Frontier yet with planet landings etc
But come on.....As far as the original elite in space goes its incredible....And with so much more to come.

If it wasn't due out for another four years but was offered to us now to play we would have bit his hand off :)

Once you did a few hundred missions, killed ~1000 wanted npc, mined, explored ~1000 systems... what's left?

Factions evolution is broken (half of the systems are stuck), exploration is nice but it's getting old after a few days (you see nice systems but... after a while it's a bit boring and it's not affecting the game world at all), wanted npc are scaled for a fully fitted cobra and missions are always the same. Bring x to station y and get 30k, kill x and get 150k.

I can definitly understand why people are bored after a while, i don't feel like my actions have any influence on this world, i don't see a long term goal to reach and i'm not talking about getting a new ship. I wanted to switch a faction in a small remote system with a few friends, not 0.1% evolution after 4 days of heavy farming, i looked on the forum and saw that 60 guys (the dukes) were doing the same things and were stuck.

I want to do something that matter in the game world and there is nothing to do. I'm not talking about switching a system by myself, but being part of something that change some portions of the game. Helping a system to switch faction, helping a faction to set up a new outpost, discovering a new system and making npc start to move here to mine, making a pirate area safe to allow more traders to travel boosting a system economy in the process and so on.

Are you referring to combat/bounty hunting?

If so, the repetitive nature of combat currently is one of the big issues, as well as the fact there is no real reward for it.
Same load-out, spam shield cells, chaff e.t.c. doesn't really 'do it' for me.

Also the way 'FA off' mode is implemented currently is simply . I mean seriously, who actually wants to have to manually counter rotation?
If you've played StarCitizen, the way de-coupled mode works in that makes far more sense and allows you the same freedom of movement in your ship, without the extra work. (Unless this has changed since beta)
There should at least me an option to do this, however I expect if there was, very very few people would use FA off anymore unless it gave some arbitrary advantage.

You come to another good point there as well which is the quality of the AI pilots. Really, has anyone found a AI pilot that can give a semi-decent pilot a run for his money in a 1v1 fight? Even elite pythons seem far to easy to nuke.

Maybe not even close to final. But I'm glad I can play it *right now*.

I agree with this. While there is still certainly so much more to be done, and really the sky is the limit as far as the potential of what can be done with this engine, I would much rather have it to play now and see the development process unfold than to still be waiting. Its more than playable and enjoyable in its current state.

The sound changes are one of the best bits of this game so far for me (sad that really in some ways), but in terms of handling/flight characteristics? Very little difference between the ships.
For example I would expect the type 9 to 'slide' a lot more than a sidewinder when you try and turn it. It doesn't slide noticeably any more. Some ships yaw a bit better than others is the only other major handling difference I've seen.
There is a lot more they could do to make each ship far more distinct.

I agree. Currently ED is a nice plate of perfectly cooked roast potatoes ..... But I'm waiting for the meat and veg to arrive to make my meal comlpete.....
and then I would like pudding !!!

This. I'm really just killing time until star citizen.

This is unfortunately the same for me, but I don't want it to be.
I want to love this game as I did the original elite at the time and Frontier in it's time as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glade I can play the game in this state as well!
But as it's "released" new players aren't going to look at that or care. They are going to play for a bit, get bored after a while and go play something else, likely never to return.

40% of this game is about DOING something, but 60% is about just BEING there and enjoying that. If you cant BE without DOING, you will never fall in love with this strange piece of software.

I fundamentally agree with you, however, a game needs to provide much more depth and ambiance for this to be viable. As many of you also have, I have logged days in game. The entire world feels exactly the same. Every starport every interaction, everything has a "sameness" that precludes me at leastfrom enjoying "just being in it "

That being said, I am still enjoying the "doing ". But this also will have a limit, if nothing fundamentally changes in the months to come, I can't see myself enjoying the same still combat and the same boring trading routes indefinitely.

IGN has still not released a review of this game. I'm expecting them to summit up about like this. Great foundation, lots of potential, not much to do after the first few weeks.

I backed that as well..... But im not to impressed at the moment... Gameplay vids aren't quite as exiting as I expected...Also hate the cutscenes
Walk to ladder ( Cutscene ) on ship walk to chair ( Cutscene ) etc etc

This is what keeps me coming back. Yeah I do have a good time playing and I enjoy most of it even if it feels like a grind at times, but I know there are bigger and better things in the works. Games like this are never really complete, there will always be additions and somethings they said they would never do will be done and some of the awesome things you thought would never make it into the game will, in time.
