As the name of thread implies. I hit esc, and choose either exit to main menu or desktop, the game freezes I see a planet landscape on left and blackness the rest. Have to use task manager to exit the game to free it up. This happened before and after the latest patch. Happens every time.

I have seen this too. But only at a Guardian Module site, and only if I killed Sentries. Otherwise all would work normally.
Have you done anything similar, maybe fought skimmers? Or does it happen if you just log in, do nothing, and log out again?
I did report it on the issue tracker, others have too.

I’m only a noob still go here and there and not doing much of anything, yet the same happened to me too.

You tried to report it on the old bug report forums - they no longer are available.
You should use the new issue tracker. You have to log int with your game account - not the Steam account, if you use steam, but with the same account you can login to Frontier Store.
Here are the links to two issue reports, one of them is marked [Fixed], but this was done by the poster, who thought he found a work around. Both reports are open. Just add your report to one of them, or better both. Platform does not matter, it happens on all platforms, PC, XBOX,...

Look - we are trying to report a bug here, a serious one, if only on these sites. It also could be connected to the crash which happens, if you fight skimmers.

The same as described above has happened to me several times. I tried to quit to the main menu and faced with this issue then I was forced to kill game process via task manager.

Had the same problem during the entire time I was at the Guardian sites where as I had to deal with the Sentinels. If and when I had to switch from one mode to another, the system would crash and like you, all I could do is a complete restart from my devices home screen.
On a positive note, now that I've completed getting all the blueprints I desire and am playing the game. It's not happened once all day to day.

Same issue here but mostly when quiting to desktop. Sometimes it will quit on it's own but takes a while with the black screen. Other times I need to close the exe with task manager. At no time does it ever quit like its supposed to.
This also occurred after flying my own ship to Synuefe EN-H d11-96 locating, docking and entering hanger of the Megaship which is now in system. Prior to that I had piloted my own way to this area Scanning and Mapping the route and as such had a fair amount of data which I was unexpectedly able to hand into the cartographer there especially after spending spent some time in SYNUEFE EU-Q C21-10
I have also noticed this logging out issue even if you are docked on the Megaship or in space even on a planet surface. It is happening every time now since the recent updates. As such I have posted an Issue tracking report.

Suddenly started getting this when I'm on a planet surface in the SRV. Quit to Main Menu or Desktop, black screen of death. Have to Task Manager out of "ED Executable".
