Game freezes PC when launching after January update. Anyone else?

Hello Cmdrs!
So, like most of us I updated my game client last night. The launcher works fine, but when I hit play my screen goes black and my entire PC freezes and crashes within seconds.
The first time it happened, I could hear the game's music in the background, the other 8 times I tried my PC just died on me leaving only a hard reset as an option.
I'm playing the game on this machine for over 3 years now, this is the first time I run into an issue as severe as this.
No hardware or driver changes were done between last starting the game when it was in working order for me and updating it.
YES, my antivir and firewall are configured correctly and no, I will certainly not disable them.

Things I did to try and find a solution:

- verified the game files via launcher. Interestingly, it starts downloading and installing SOMETHING, but to no avail. It keeps doing that, when I start the verification process, so maybe that's just part of how it works.

- updated my graphics driver, no change.

- checked Win 10 event log for any clues, but no dice (I'm running Win 10 for years now, I'm reasonably certain that it's not to blame, especially since it is stable in all other regards and the problem only occured after the Jan update of Elite.)

- raised an issue with the Issue Tracker (so far no replies)

- installed Patch 1 for January Patch, no changes

- Google, Google, Google. Couldn't find anybody with the exact same issue in the ocean of new issues that came with the update.

- set Launcher and Client to run with admin priviliges, no change.

If anybody has the same issue or even found a solution or has meaningful suggestions, I'd be happy to hear from you!

Fly safe, Cmdrs o7

there is going to be an intrim patch to address a gpu stutter bug it could be related to that
else I would try a 50hz downclock using the slider on msi afterburner(overclocking /underclocking tool) as that may allow you to play in the mean time maybe
if you leave running in the background and set it to not save the setting upon pc reboot

Hey there Strontium Dog, thx for your reply o7
Can you please explain to me why you think this would work? The reason I'm asking is because it sounds a bit esoteric to me,
not sure that adding an outside program into the mix messing with my graphics card will not maybe distort the issue instead of solving it.
Edit: Also, like I stated, I don't have stuttering issues with the game. It just flat out crashes my PC a few secs after I hit the Play button.

Update: I uninstalled and reinstalled the game meanwhile, the issue still persists unfortunately ^^

The issue tracker is not the same as contacting support, if you need support then contact them directly. (The option to do so is I'm one of the menus in your launcher).

If you have a laptop ensure that it is plugged in and the game is set to use the discrete GPU as opposed to the on board graphics (through the gpu drivers). Another thing you can do to prove this is to simply plug it into a tv or monitor with HDMI, this forces the laptop to use the GPU.

I lost my key bindings. Too many to remember. I have to go on muscle memory.

Sorry to hear/read that...

There are posts around which can help you "backup" yr keybinds... when yr muscle mem helps you re-establish them...

Me, I have a "cheat sheet" image file for mine, as well as a file backup I can't remember where (in which folder) I stored.. :p

Good luck.

Hi Cmdr
After the game freezes, if you CTRL-ALT-DEL, can you get the Task Manager up or does Windows completely freeze?

See you in the Black cmdr ........hopefully.

Hi Shinkick,

It may be useful to know the specifications of your system, please, to give further context in which to consider your predicament.

Also, please be sure to "backup" your set of user files eg Journal, Key binds.. I'm sure there'd be easy-to-find "guides" for these, offered by community members (I don't have links handy, sorry)..

If you've ever "tweaked" config-related files, it may be useful to review the last file you adjusted, to make sure there's no typos...

Finally, while presuming your FORUM LOGIN is fine, as you've posted your concern here, please go to the Frontier Store and use THAT login, to ensure it's still working fine, too.

You said that, post Jan update, you got 1 load that played game music, and subsequently none. I'm wondering if a TEMP FILE somewhere may also be an issue. Are you familiar w Piriform freeware called "CCleaner"? Recommend you run that. (AFTER having backed up user files, keybinds, journal, etc)

Mean time, please jot yr system's specs down here. CPU, RAM (incl makeup, eg 2x8Gb + 2x empty slots) , GPU (& whether discrete, on-board, or APU), any ED-related peripherals (HOTaS, VR/head tracker, etc)... Let's start there and see if we can't work thru the problem to find a solution. :)

Hello Acen ONYX, thank you for your extensive reply!

I have already backed up my key bindings as well as my Cmdr Journals since I tried reinstalling the game, so no worries there.
I have never tweaked any game related files, they should all be as they were. My Frontier Login is working as well, I use it to log myself in here,
also the Launcher shows me logged in correctly.
Running CCleaner might be an idea, I have indeed not done that in a while, will do after I finish posting this, thanks for the idea!

Now to my system specs. It might be worth noting that I do use a flightstick as well as a throttle control, but the game crashes on startup regardless of them being
plugged in or not, I tested it.

System specs:
Intel Core i5 6600k @ 3,5GHz
16 GB Dual Channel DDR4 RAM @ 1066MHz, 2x8GB in two slots, two are free
MSI Z170-A Pro Mainboard
Dedicated graphics card, ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 3GB
Audio is external USB called Muse Pocket LT3
System is running on Windows 10 Pro 64bit, slightly outdated, version 1903 (I was about to update it, but I refrained as to not throw anymore sand in the cogs as a big Win10 update usually messes up stuff in my system.)

My gaming peripherals are a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro stick & a Thrustmaster TWCS Throttle control, but as mentioned before the game crashes regardless of those two being connected or not.

Your effort and time in trying to help me with this are very much appreciated, thank you very much!
I'll try CCleaner now and will post whether it changed anything or not.

o7 & fly safe!

@Shinkick Murphy sometimes some users have experienced my self included a (TDR) windows\nvidia time out detection recovery issue within the gpu.
this can be quite elite specific cause the gpu goes from being very busy to not having a lot to do extremely quickly the symptoms/effects of this are a blank screen but the sound continues symptom....
Users have in the past done a temporary (50hz avg) downclock using a gpu tool (like msi afterburner) which makes the gpu less sensitive to a (TDR) thus allowing them to play whilst FD optimize and debug issues detected from general release feedback about the latest update.
if you experience a tdr in other games mind it may be time to clean ya heatsinks and fans etc...…….
doing a temporary down clock is like pulling up a steed no harm will come to da beast just squeeze it's sides an your off agin
the above is not a fix just a temp measure to possibly allow play
whilst like I say FD work on intermediate patch release which should allow u to let the reins loose on the gpu once more...…….
if that is in fact that is the case and its not something like an out of date driver or corrupt game file (check with launcher options validator)
the above may work if your confident in using clocking tools...……..
if it don't no harm no foul

Similar issue here, only instead of freezing it crashes to desktop and I get this notification:

ed_crash.png

Sometimes it gets are far as the main menu, but always crashes before I manage to get into the game itself.

I assume your gpu drivers are up to date and your game files have been validated?
and you have tried a simple pc reboot?
soz if this is eggs suck! stuff but gotta be sure right...……………..

Hey Strontium Dog,

I'll give it a try then... I assume you're referring to the Core Frequency, not the Memory Frequency?
