Game freezing for several minutes at a time

I wonder if this is related to autosave. It autosaves then just freezes for several minutes and I can't do anything. Then it gets unstuck for a while then repeats. Anything that can be done about this? It's making the game almost unplayable.

Is your game fully updated to the latest version? There were some issues with this previously that we fixed, so I just want to eliminate some possibilities

I thought it automatically updates when you launch it after a free update is released and the last pc update was a while ago.

Depends whether you have auto-update enabled in Steam or not.
