Game is a slideshow

Just went in to play the game and every time I jump the game slows to a crawl. Is anyone else seeing this or is my brand new computer taking a celestial dump...

Nope..it's all ok. Just takes time to configure things, including sytem itself: for me Nvidia 520 driver works, with newest 525 it lags as hell.
This game is super demanding on proper system config.

Specify "slows to a crawl" and "slideshow". If you mean that you sometimes get sub-10 FPS or even seconds-long stutters, but the rest is around 40-60 FPS, then it works as designed. Welcome to Elite Dangerous: Odyssey.

Hyperspace load times can be heavily dependent on galaxy map and FX quality settings. That said, unless you're using custom settings that are well beyond any of the available presets, it shouldn't be a big deal on a decent system.

What's in your brand new computer?

Bad description on my part, I guess. The computer is about a month old, and ED ran fine previously, which is why I thought maybe it was a system wide problem. When I left Jameson everything was normal, but as soon as I dropped out after my first jump everything slowed to a crawl, maybe 5 fps or so. Never recovered. Quit the game and reloaded and had the same experience on the next jump. Then I came here...

Hmm ...looks like something outside game in system. Any of in-game bugs can be fixed by restart at least for a short period after launch.

Update: Problem seems to be gone now. Rebooted my computer twice and it was good after the second time... 🤷‍♂️

Thanks to everyone for replying!

Sometimes for me the game does not close properly and I have to force close it. When that happens there is a small chance that when I open it again, it will run at only a few fps. It will not go back to normal until I restart my PC. My PC is a bit janky so I though t it was just me.

I've a reasonably high spec PC and get good FPS (120-140) with most settings cranked to the max, most of the time but I do experience the 8-15 fps problems occasionally, usually in stations when you get out on-foot, especially in the hanger. Its worse and happens more frequently in planetary stations (and occasionally in settlements when doing missions) but its guaranteed if I go visit an engineer, if I get out of my ship at any of them, Odyssey or Horizons it doesn't matter its 5-8 fps guaranteed

Its as if the numerous patches and performance enhancements FDev have applied to improve performance just hasn't been implemented within all parts of the game (or they've missed some servers or something), its really annoying when it happens and restarting or rebooting just doesn't clear it....

I have never experienced any low framerates. Must be highly dependent on individual setups.
Back in the early days it was almost guaranteed to have massive FPS drops (cyclically) on bodies with several extraction settlements. (I recorded one visit, back in the day) But that was fixed, very well, aound Update 6 I think.

Not had any serious drops since that time, so hearing about a guaranteed issue makes me want to try it out!

Foot engineers, or sip, or both?
I'd like to try to repeat your issue, having a reasonable PC also.
Both, basically all engineers if its for suits, weapons, ship modules all of them pretty much. Just land and disembark and its 5-8 fps time. Looking around (i.e. scanning the environment) slightly improves matters to 10-12 fps but that's the best I can get.

Re-logging or completely resetting doesn't make a difference.

The other times I get low fps its hit or miss (sometimes happens but mostly ok), but engineers its repeatable.

Odd, i visited Marco Qwent just today and didn't see that, I am seeing a lot more delayed terrain rendering since the last couple of updates. FWIW, i7-10700, 16 GB Ram, RTX 2060.

I think something changed with 14.02, I went to Selene Jean today and although the fps was lower than usual (30-50 fps) it certainly wasn't as pronounced as it was prior to 14.02 where it was very bad and repeatable as I mentioned.

I too have noticed that post 14.02 the terrain rendering is worse, I see a lot more checkerboarding than before the latest patch, the gravity physics are as bad as they've always been - i.e. rocks and plants drop a foot or two on the horizon which is distracting, it keeps reminding me of the Apollo 18 film where the rocks on the moon were alive...
