Just a day or so after managing to get a permit to Sol somehow I managed to get the Feds offside to the point where my status became hostile, and it quickly became apparent that there was little to nothing I could do to reverse it. At first I was a little annoyed, considering I'm really not sure how I managed to go from hero to zero in Feds eyes so quickly (possibly for being caught with stolen loot one too many times perhaps). But soon after I started to enjoy the fact that Feds would swarm me on sight, and that now I had nothing to lose by shooting them down. The game has swiftly become way more interesting to me now that it has in fact become 'dangerous'. I have to stay on my toes whenever I'm in Fed space now and the game is now a lot more action packed. Prior to this there were times I had to go out of my way to find action. Not any more.
Game is a lot more fun when a large % of the galaxy wants you dead 100% of the time. I highly recommend making an all-out enemy of a faction.
I suppose I should also take this moment to issue a warning to any Fed aligned CMDRs. Come near me, and I'm shooting first and asking questions later. Call it griefing if you want, but the fact of the matter is that the Feds are now my mortal enemies, and I do not discriminate, CMDRs or NPCs.
