If you can track it down, Hardwar is worth a look.

It's very Elite-like, with the exception that it all takes place on a claustrophobic Titan. Very atmospheric and a fun game (played it recently - still fun. :) )

Really, you dont think that oolite does everything elite does on the amiga, but with the added missions etc of first enc? (I even added the amiga sounds oxp just for a bit of nostalgia)

each to their own i guess, but personlly I think oolite is brilliant, esp with some of the extra oxps for additional flavour (though some of them may imbalance the game so care is needed)

I do love Oolite. Especially with the right combination of OXP's. I guess I just like the functionality of Elite, the way it is just basically a combat, nav and trading interface, this allows me to use my imagination to the max without any pesky 'content' getting in the way.
But I agree - Oolite is brilliant - I have been playing it on and off since '05 and with the keys bound to the original Elite keys it is loads of fun.

This is the bit that I struggle with with Oolite. What exactly is the "right combination of OXPs"? The choices are bewildering. :S

Oh Hardwar is one of my favourite ever games - still got the boxed version sitting behind me. Does it actually run on modern machines? And why is it not up on gog.com?

most waiting is ed so inbetween i play a lot of frog fractions

mainly because i read frog factions and thought it be a great game to have guilds and stuff. imagine my surprise when i noticed the game had upgrades like warp drive, gimballed weapons and seamlesss planetary landing (on mars with a dragon mind you...)

try it ^^

Vendetta Online is one of the best games I've played. I've spent well over a thousand hours on it, and look forward to some of the upcoming changes.

A video from a recent player-run event:

As an interesting side note, back when our guild formed in 2003 we took our name from the police ship in the original Elite. There are definitely some Elite fans that took a formative role in the community.

Allegiance can help you get used to the controls and pseudo-newtonian dogfighting.

I've found her goes further into the Newtonian, but should be good for getting used to a similar set of movements.

Finally actual flight sims may be good for getting practice with the bank and pitch turning.

To answer the OP, I'veBeen playing Evochron Mercenary recently, the scale is pretty amazing as is the content. Well worth a look.

Sure Oolite is much like Elite but the closest modern title I can think of with the scale and what you can do in it is Evochron Mercenary.

Evochron Mercenary is definitely the most 'Elite Dangerous-like' of the games out there (free demo too). Look at the similarities between it and Elite Dangerous:

• Play it either online multiplayer, with 32 players in an instance, or offline with NPCs
• Set in the real galaxy, only about 35 systems but that includes the Sol system and all the other ones nearby such as Alpha Centurai etc.
• Seamless travel anywhere without load screens, including right down to the planet's surface.
• Planetary exploration on the surface after landing.
• Trading at space stations, on the planet surface at stations, or between ships.
• Trade, fight, do missions, mine stuff etc.
• Upgrade your ship with various bits and pieces.
• 3D cockpit which is very similar to the Elite Dangerous ships, support for Track IR.
• Newtonian flight, but with flight assistance if you prefer it to make it more 'dogfighty'.
• Combat that involves, tweaking your systems to avoid heat signature, boosting weapon systems etc.
• Missiles, lasers, railguns etc.
• Has a federation of pilots, similar to Elite.
• Has various factions and rival corporations.

Maybe I'm just being too sensitive: I've got two negatives to 'EM'. The perceived size of the planets, especially during landing; and the general game color pallet. I wish these weren't immersion breakers for me.
