Game play stratergy information needed

I have stopped playing Elite Dangerous a few months ago.
I blundered into getting a hostile reputation and was unable to work out how to recover it. ( it seemed to be way to difficult ).
I will continue to check occasionally to see if there is an updated manual which (a) will remind me how to do the basics, and most importantly (b) will allow me to determine a strategy to peruse. ( and that reputation has been re balanced ).
There is a phrase " if your in a hole stop digging " until I have enough information to work out what I want to do I will do nothing.
If the reputation system has been re vamped to make recovery possible please let me know.. I used to enjoy elite so much on my BBC computer, ( I got to Elite status ) what price fancy graphics if my game play is ruined ?

I also got myself hostile (with the federation) early on in the game

solution - find a system with federation presence, but not ownership.
collect bounties & do missions. donation missions especially...
join a combat zone on the feds side
trade with federation outposts (not main stations) as they don't tend to have police ships to scan you!

(delete as applicable - federation / empire / alliance)

if you PM me, I can tell you a system with a very good setup to fix your rep with the feds while making money too.

To continue the metaphor it depends on how deep the hole is.
If you have been destroying a factions ships for the past 6 months they are unlikely to be nice to you just because you gave them 300Cr worth of medicine.

There is plenty out there to tell you how to get your rep back if you knew how to search, to be nice and save you the trouble:
Do missions. Stealth or boost into the factions stations and pick up missions, particularly the aid missions. Keep doing those and they will eventually like you again.

1 good deed does not equal 1 bad deed in Elite. It takes multiple green up arrows to account for 1 red down arrow. If you are too far in either stick to the other factions systems or reset your save.
Or you could keep complaining on the forum asking for things that are already there.

Reputation is getting a sort of change in powerplay 1.3, Im going to be evil and not point you to the changelog, may you forever fear the forum search engine.

Edit: Yes lots of sarcasm in this post but I feel I have been helpful and sarcastic in equal measures so its nicely balanced. :D

Good advice ? I manage to get into a minor Federation base and find no missions because of my reputation.. classic catch 22 situation.

I don't want to louse a position it took several months to build, if re setting is my only option then maybe I should just quit.

When is 1.3 due for release ? I will check back then :)

1.3 is due anytime in the next two weeks unless they delay it.

Personally If I had anything above a Cobra i'd probably just fly in a different factions space and add it to my roleplay experience (fly in Empire if Federation is hostile or Federation if Empire is hostile). Pretend you are wanted for crimes you didn't commit or something :)
With bounty changes you can combat your way to a Cobra within a few hours play. Get a high level friend as a Wingman to drop you some palladium and stuff and 3/4 hours could get you into a Vulture for RES hunting.

Ah the classic catch 22, then my recommendation changes to what others have said: gather bounty credits or exploration data and sell it to the hostile faction to gain rep (to get the first missions appearing again).

come back in say ..................... another 6 months .................and it will still be the same

you could ...

try playing in Empire/Alliance space or see what "Powerplay" brings

or clear save and start again

Thank you for your good advice. I don't do a lot of fighting, more trading and mining. ( to slow to fight well :-( )
I think I might take a long hike and trade in the navigation data while waiting to see what the update brings.
I want to visit Earth... not any time soon I guess.
Is there any way I can find out how well I'm doing if I rely on exploration data sales and trade to rebuild my reputation ?
