Game start- not being given any direction...

While I am totally against ED leading us and telling us what to do, I do feel that the new player experience is poor.
It could do with maybe a proper flight school, or something along those lines, instead of videos and disjointed training missions.
I do wonder how many people buy elite, fire it up and hit a wall full of WTH, struggle and then go play something less trouble. Sure there are videos and training missions but these require players to step away from what they really want to do...play ED. How many people actually visit game forums compared to the overall player base?...Not many I suspect
.
A decent set of starter missions based around a flight school where you earn your license, get to try out all the ships, practice the essentials and even earn credits to carry forward into 'live' space by running rookie missions, would create a much better felling of connectivity to the game and provide a much more coherent training for new pilots.
.
After the training they are on their own to go and totally screw it up in the cold vacuum of space :)

Its a freeform game you do exactly what you like when you like

there was no direction to the toilets what do i do i need a dump lol

As everyone says... This isn't Call of Duty. There isn't a linear path, there is no end-game. It is completely endless. You do what you like. A lot of people are grinding their way up to an Anaconda/Python by doing tons of trading. Some people have gotten to a Viper/Cobra and have called it a day, and are now pirating and bounty hunting.

Some people prefer their Eagle, and just have kept that and upgraded it to absolute maximum - And now trek out into Warzones to collect their mercenary pay.

Some people do a little bit of everything - including doing missions for factions, to increase their rank with the Federation or Empire.

This game is a semi-permadeath game. If you don't have enough money to cover your insurance [check the right-hand screen for your insurance payout + credit balance] - You start off in that same basic Sidewinder you're in right now.. You could have amassed 100,000,000Cr. Bought a new ship, accidentally docked without requesting permission, get blown to bits.. You're back to Square One. Hundreds of hours of effort wasted in seconds.

There are plenty of threads around here, just like that... And everyone trolls them, because it's their fault for not flying with enough money to cover their insurance! :D Here's hoping in a couple of weeks we don't see your Z0MG!!RAGEQUIT!!11 thread pop up!

OBLIGATORY NEWBIE MEME:

THIS GAME HAS NO LINEAR PATH?!

Simply put, you can do whatever you like. The only main limit is your imagination. OK, you cannot (yet) land at planets, get out of your ship, or properly team up with other commanders, but those are in the pipeline. Get out there, find what you really like doing, and knock yourself out!

It's a total sand box game, there is nothing to do, lol. Grab a pail and shovel and play.

Go Kill something, trade, do random missions that stations give. There is no plot, no campaign no reason to play other than the one you make for yourself.

there is a plot evolving through the news feeds and the next emperor.
Players can influence the different factions
The 'main' purpose is to become Elite the clue is in the title of the game.
Its not a sandbox you cant do 'everything' you want.

Thats in the tutorials

Check your system map you'll find it in the left hand side hud. search for ringed gas giants, bonus if the system youre in is an extraction system, go to the resource extraction sites in those rings, fly around a bit you'll eventually find more dogfighting than you can handle. Zipping in and out of the asteroid belts id exhilarating!

...and as far as goals, you set them yourself, just a tip if youre story orientated check galnet news often when docked, theres plenty going on in several systems right now.

Yes it is but my point is that they are separate from the live game as are the videos so it is all to easy to skip it and get to the bit you paid for...the live game
I just think it could actually be done in a more cohesive and immersive manner which would add to the experience instead of being 'read this' before playing type of thing. Human nature is to ignore instructions, guides etc until after the fact...why not make it an immersive 'ingame' experience so that a pilots training is in the real 'online' game world bringing them into the world of danger instead of assuming they will read manuals and do 'out of galaxy' tutorials

About this old

Ah, the "Angry German Kid". :p

When I first saw that video, I thought: "Either this isn't real, he's acting there - or someone gave him the wrong medication that morning".

Here's another viewpoint on the video & kid:

I do hope the kid was just acting on those videos.

And shame on the dorks who bully him (or anyone else) in school, even resorting to physical violence.

The game is a sandbox, you do whatever you want. If you want to buy stuff, go make money. If you just want to fight go to nav beacons or resource extraction sites and deploy hardpoints.

Do people drive? You take lesson an exam and test get a licence. They just dont let you out on the road on your own. RTFM

The army get soldiers to use oculus rift and are given manuals to read . Nobody shouts for ironman mode
