Gameplay Aspects to consider changing!

Hello!

First of all I would like to say. THIS IS NOT a thread to bash the game. I love Elite Dangerous and I have been playing nothing but this game since it came out! I just want to detail some areas that I really really think need to be addressed. This game is amazing, but nothing is without fault!

1. Fuel Scooping HUD's are different on certain ships.

Issue: Eagle Fuel Scooping HUD is actually just pasted right over top of the middle of your HUD. While the Viper and other ships the Fuel Scooping HUD is conveniently tucked above your field of view and out of the way.

- This one makes me scratch my head. The Fuel Scooping HUD, in my opinion, on the viper, is what all of them should look like.
- Eagle's variation is must larger and plastered across your screen. When I jumped into a Viper is was directly after a Maintenance and I thought the Fuel Scooping HUD was updated!
- Vipers is less intrusive of your field of view while still maintaining a nice place for ease of view. Its an important function, but one you cannot turn off or make it go away until you move away from a star or sell the module.
- Eagle's sticks out and almost says "Hey! Look! Im important! Please stare at me until you are away from the star!"

Solution: I feel as though all HUDs should look like the Vipers, because it does not obstruct your view and because of its location, it looks more believable that its apart of your HUD in the ship.

2. NPC's the REAL Jerks of the Galaxy!

Issue: You are minding your own business and flying safely into the Docking Port (For the purposes of this thats what we are calling it because I dont knowwhat the Plasma Window that you enter from outside space, or exit to leave is called) when suddenly a NPC comes flying top speed down the side you are flying into! He rams the edge of your ship sending you flying into the Docking Ports side. Your stuck and the station alerts you that you have stopped. With much effort you finally scramble to get out of the port, only to realize that you now have fines to pay...

- NPCs frequently disobey the Green/Red markers and "flight" paths into and out of the stations. Green markers for "Use this side" and a Red to indicate which side you SHOULDNT fly down seem to not matter. Of course this doesnt always happen but I have seen it from other NPCs and have had it happen to me.
- High Trafficked Starports seem to almost narrowly miss being jammed and congested at the Docking Port entrance.
- To me it would make perfect sense to make the NPCs follow a strict flight pattern into and out of the starports, especially in areas that see tons of NPCs flying in and out of them.
- Dont get me wrong, players scare me too but I have yet to meet one that is an ass enough to just ram you full force while attempting to get into a station.
- Shoot me all you want to, but please do not ram me so I get stuck in the models of the side of the station which could get my ship blow up... NPCs do this far more often than what I would like to think.

Proposed Solution: Give priorities to NPCs with big ships like the Python, or Lakon Type 9 that can enter. Have them stop or circle around the station until its their turn. If its all smaller ships, have them line up and use only appropriate side of the Docking Bay Entrance. Either that, or loosen the slack on penalties and fines for not meeting "Docking Protocol" to players.

3. Nav Beacons- Histarium's 2 step guide to becoming the richest person in the galaxy tomorrow!

Issue: Go to a Nav Beacon, even if its just a starter sidewinder, spend 35 minutes here and kill anything that says "Wanted" and you gain to net anywhere from 9k to 45k! With that many credits just pouring out of Nav Beacons and Bounty Hunting, why would you ever need to ACTUALLY hunt bounties? For the rest of this section lets call it what Elite Dangerous makes it, Bounty Killing.

- Bounty Killing in Nav Beacon areas, especially with a Warrant Scanner and Anarchy system see the easiest and most profitable thing any one player can do for himself.
- Comparison (Subject to my gameplay experiences ONLY your experience may differ!) : Trading/courier missions after 35 minutes- Depending on the system and which ones you picked up, you could see anywhere from 2k to 15k. Exploring after 35 minutes- 1x Basic Discovery Scanner + 1x Ship of any kind + a dozen or so unexplored systems, perferably with more than one star and more than 1 planet will get you something like 5k to 20k in a short period of time, although it can get boring and frustrating at times when you think a dot could be another star in that system, but turns out to be a distant one. Mining after 35 minutes= Hey! Im not done yet! Can you wait another hour? Seriously, mining probably takes the most time and the most effort out of anything I have tried to do in Elite Dangerous. took me a couple of hours and I gained about 9k... hardly worth doing. Those are the 3 basic ideas of things you expect to do. Of course there is more but they boil down to those basic things: Bounty Killing, Trading/courier Missions, Mining, Exploring.
- As I have outlined, Nav beacons are by far the most profitable, early game and late game for ANY player. Sure you can take missions but if you want to make the most of your time, head to a nav beacon.
- This emphasis on bounties and nav beacons has crippled the options of other parts of the game. I actually feel discouraged to mining because of how long it takes to make anything at it. That and the lack of "Mining specific" missions.

Solution #1: Do away with Nav Beacons entirely and put more emphasis on USS locations. (Or Unidentified Signal Sources). This could make the game world seem more alive and make more sense if done properly than just throwing randomly generated, highly wanted NPC targets at a pre-defined location. Have the same kind of happenings with Unidentified Signal Sources. Bounty Hunters interdicting and then you can jump in to help out or claim the bounty. In turn, you could place more pirates and miners in asteroid belts/planetary rings. Miners go to mine, pirates attack, you defend and get their bounties. In turn, you could even go as far as adding more "kill" missions. Where you get a mission to protect miners in a Extraction system or one with a lot of asteroid belts/planetary rings. This would spawn pirates and you get their bounties + the reward for protecting the miners and possible faction standings for the faction/ corporation they represent.

Solution #2: Again instead of Nav Beacons, have dynamically generated areas that go away over time. Maybe jumping into a USS you find a group of pirate ships attacking a hauler. You start to help and upon doing so, the system security shows up to help. You get most of all the bounties and a clue as to where you could find the same faction pirates in that particular system! After awhile you are seen as hostile and can take missions in the bulletin board to help the local security end their unwelcomed stay in the system. Or maybe you like the pirates/criminals in the system and want to help them. Instead of just randomly throwing criminal missions on the bullentin board, you find one of these locations, help the pirates and as a show of "thanks" they give you a mission to head to a nearby station for more "missions" and credits. giving you a bit of a storyline into the underside/darkside of the galaxy!

I didnt even get into how I feel that the other "job" types should get looked at for its gameplay. Exploring could use a more hands on approach than just "Look for something that moves!" I.E. Directional Scanner that you can play with distance and clarity (The further away you try to scan, the less clarity you get of unknown objects. Icon could look like the flashing ship icons when you are too far for a accurate scan. False readings until you narrow your search or get "eyes on" the object. I'll make another post about exploring and ideas I have for it as well!)

4. Transmission Not Sent, could not connect to Frontier

Issue: While trying to send text or voice comms, more often than not, I will get that above message "Transmission not sent" so much so that I have stopped using the in game chat entirely, adding people on skype or my steam account to talk to them there. I love the in game voice chat and being able to see texts in game, but its just so unreliably bad right now!

- I have no idea if its an intended feature that you are only allowed to send texts/voice comms from a certain distance to the player. It would make sense because its highly unlikely that you can send a signal with instaneous responses from 90 light years away. However, I do not believe that it was an intended feature as Iv seen people on streams/youtube videos who do not have this issue with anyone.
- This problem could just be my connection to the server. I do have rather bad internet, so much so that I sometimes play Solo out of respect for other players who might seem my laggy ship bouncing all over the galaxy!

5. NPC Shoots! HE SCORES! CMDR Histarium gets a 9,000 Credit Bounty! *crowd cheers*

Issue: Sometimes an NPC will shoot at me first, and I will then proceed to have a bounty. Sometimes, an NPC will show up having a 6k Bounty... I blow them up but instead of getting 6,000 credits, I get that as my "Wanted Bounty".
- Irritating and frustrating to get a random bounty and then shot at by other NPCs or worse, another player.
- I am not referencing the times where a System Security Ship would fly directly threw my line of fire, getting hit and then giving me a 200 cr bounty, which he then proceeded to shoot at me for. I get that its probably hard to fix and is probably more realistic if THAT specific aspect is left alone.
- I do not feel like, getting a bounty after killing a wanted target, is "working as intended", nor do I feel like being shot by a wanted NPC and then getting a bounty, despite not shooting at anything prior to getting the bounty.
- I have seen other people write about this issue on the forums. Just detailing it again as its entirely frustrating to deal with when I had no control over it. Would be different if I did something on purpose to get the bounty, like shooting at a ship thats not wanted in that system.
- Yes, one time while in Empire space, (I think the system was called Raxato?) I shot at and destroyed a wanted target which had a 9,650cr Bounty displayed on my screen. I then proceeded to get an exact 9,650cr bounty on MY head after he blew up.

Again, I love the game to death and Iv been playing it almost obsessively after work and on the weekends! Just wanted to detail a few issues I experienced myself with the game!

Keep up the good work Frontier!

Id like to also add another issue with Nav Beacons (btw I think Nav Beacons are by far the buggiest part of the entire game...)

Issue: When in a Nav Beacon and you happen to "Scan the wrong ship" the federal/empire/system security will turn on you regardless of a Wanted bounty
- I realize maybe this is just a hate generating thing.
- I also realize that I am neutral with the factions defending that system
- However, I believe this is completely irritating and useless for the player
- When using a K-Scanner on certain ships, they will just out right attack you and it appears that they get immunity to the local government for doing so. You scanned them with a Kill Warrant Scanner after all... Right!?
- Makes doing bounty hunting difficult if suddenly all of the "clean" ships decide to turn on you and you, a lone pilot, have about 4 ships attacking you
- You'll gain a bounty if you attack "Clean" targets that are attacking you in a Nav beacon.
- Only thing you can do is SC out and then back in.

Proposal: Please for the love of god change the way hate/aggression is gained by NPCs towards players! I cant seem to figure it out. I am not wanted, so why is this system security trying to kill me?! The only issue I could see
was that I was using a Kill Warrant Scanner on clean ships... Thats the only thing I can think of. Its thats the case, then it really needs to be changed.

One more issue for the road!

Issue: AI need more intelligence!
- AI seem to completely ignore Players
- Larger ships in stations have problems with entering the access corridor, and landing on the landing pad.
- Specifically Lakon Type-9 NPCs will bang against the hangar bay in the wrong spot, Lift up and repeat the process over and over again. sometimes the force of them banging against the floor will get them in the right spot, other times the station will destory their ship after revoking its docking time frame and giving it a wanted loitering bounty.
- AI are fine in combat, outside of combat they seem to wander around aimlessly and bump into things, or get themselves killed if they weren't a wanted target.
- Large ships seem to have the hardest time with flying, like the AI just doesnt know how to fly the larger ships.
- Having the station kill NPCs IS a clever way to get rid of NPCs who get stuck or are . However, its NOT a long term solution to AI. Which makes me not want to trust the Docking Computers at all...
- Improving the AI would make the game more challenging and less stressful, immersion breaking in places like stations
- its 2014, I dont like seeing broken NPC AI that repeatedly bumps into a wall, over and over again until their ship blows up or the game mechanics gets them killed.

If I have more, I will post here!

Adding another issue:

Tons of people have made me aware that its not just me that frustrated with it.

Issue: Fines/Wanted Status/ getting bounties does not work well and needs to be changed.

- Firing a single bullet on accident and getting a 200 cr fine
- Fines for not following docking procedures every time to a tee. People make mistakes, they shouldnt have to worry about being blow up if they make a mistake while docking.
- It makes learning the game superficially hard. Meaning, you are forcing the new players to play the game exactly perfect each and every time and from that point on, never make a single mistake.
- Sure 200 credits is reasonable, however, some have reported getting aggression from stations and station security just for simply making a mistake in the docking procedure.
- NPCs appear to not have these rules of engagement, or obey docking procedures as strict as players, some just appear to immediately get blown up, others are just stupid and get stuck in the station only to get blown up.

Solution: Do away with the "You will get blown up!" of players. Make this a thing for long term loitering and entering a station without permission for a set period of time longer than 30 seconds. Keep it for NPCs that get stuck or just simply fix your currently broken AI flight paths into and out of stations. Make it so that NPCs also get bounties for shooting at a clean player. Take away Kill Warrant Scanner aggression of "Clean" targets. They are allowed to scan me for bounties, I should be allowed to do the same. Stop punishing new players and people who make mistakes. Like myself, I constantly forget to ask for docking permission. Keep the fines and increase the penalty, dont kill targets unless the land completely onto a landing pad and intend to stay there. A NPC or Player that tries to leave always gets shot after 30 seconds despite trying to escape and correct their mistake. Docking in stations should NOT be something that has such a high risk like this and penalizes you for making the simpliest mistakes. Reserve the "Risk Over Rewards" and "Mistakes will cost you" for combat only.

1. Fuel Scooping HUD's are different on certain ships.
2. NPC's the REAL Jerks of the Galaxy!
3. Nav Beacons- Histarium's 2 step guide to becoming the richest person in the galaxy tomorrow!

1. Haven't noticed it--yet.
2. Yes! Yes, they are. Stupid NPCs should demonstrate proper docking behaviour, not flying down the center of the channel. The lights follow standard naval convention, the pilots--especially NPCs--should too.
3. Eh, I don't have any complaints yet. Trading netted me lots more than sitting around shooting everything wanted. You're not trading well and need to find a lucrative route. I was pulling in 40k/20 mins with smaller ships and 200k/20 mins when I got into a Type 6. I haven't tried exploring yet.
4. Bugs
5. Clean NPCs shooting me, should become wanted. Let me shoot back! I haven't seen the bounty bugs. I've scanned clean ships with no negative results.

Docking fines: Agreed on NPCs being idiots--follow the naval port conventions, not the center. As for fines, if you slide across the pad assigned to me and smash up my ship--yes, I want you fined and shot. Use more care in the parking lot. When I saw an NPC targeted while in the entry window, then annihilated as it lowered at its landing pad--I laughed and thought  that could have been me.

Something really minor, but still annoying - the Docking Computer resets my power allocation to an even spread.

Please can we stop it doing that?

When the FSD Safe Disengage Ready message pops up, and you have successfully pressed the button to disengage, can the message change to indicate this? Something like FSD Disengaging, or similar

Can we please, please replace the horrible PARP noise at the completion of a Discovery scan with something else?

Almost anything else would be an improvement, but perhaps the ship computer announcing Scan Complete? That phrase has uses for other functions, as well.

I too would like to see NPC ships obey the traffic rules, but I also note that the Docking Computer will always take you straight down the middle, and that should be fixed, as well!

johno

hahaha... I completely agree... Actually I think it sounds like the Inception Horn or some sort of Trance/dubstep thing. Actually I was listening to some Trance while exploring and fired that off, then heard it in the song and scratched my head and realized... IT WAS THE SAME EXACT NOISE!

I would LOVE to just have a radar ping noise or something similar to that... Its silly and It makes me think the D-Scanner uses "noise" to find objects when in reality it would be the opposite. An antenna to listen for "white noise" produced by celestial objects... Would be cool to have an option to make our cockpit display space with an Infrared filter. Think NASA's doctored up colorful Nebulae images!

It does so in your messages pane (top right corner of the screen), says something like "destination lock engaged" / "no destination lock, dropping at current location".

Can we please, please replace the horrible PARP noise at the completion of a Discovery scan with something else?

I personally like that sound, maybe have a few options there?

I am not entirely convinced that those are traffic lights - could be just a space version of port / starboard lights.
