Gameplay is WAAY too fast!

If like me you're not a 16 year-old with the reaction time of a cheetah, the gameplay in combat is WAAY too fast!!

I can't get the target in my sights at all. This is very annoying as I've paid a hell of a lot of money for this game and can't play it.

It urgently needs an "Easy" mode where things don't zip around so much.

Keep at it, and you will get to grips with things. It just takes a bit of time.

The most important thing is to ensure you are using all your flight thrusters, as the game as 6 directions of freedom. You will want to be using most of these to be most effective. There is some help here on that:

Also, try getting a gimbaled pulse laser, as that will help you a lot!

As you have recently joined, I can only guess you have come on board very recently. What I would suggest is you fine tune your combat skills in the single player missions which are available in the main menu.

These will provide you with an excellent battle arena to play vs NPC to get used to the controls.

You will get better - you may not be a better pilot than the next guy, but you will be better.

FTR I'm rubbish at PvP combat, but I can hold my own vs NPC, and that was only through practise.

Also, there is no easy mode. ;)

Well, I'm 38 and I can't compete with kids any more, so I feel your pain. However, I found that with a bit of training I can actually manage the combat just fine!

Not... saying I'll be able to kill a 15yo twitch gamer flying assist off in a viper but... y'know. I can deal with NPCs just fine. Took "a while" to get the hang of it though.

This is also very much about getting a control scheme you find intuitive and natural. There's no way I could do this with the mouse. I got an old Logitech 3d Pro joystick, set up with yaw on the stick-X and the roll on the twist-RZ which you don't exactly see in the default settings, but for a spaceship it makes a lot of sense to me.

And uh... then you actually have to play until the controls become muscle memory in the lower spine. I began feeling comfortable after may 6 hours of non stop combat and an additional 6 hours of trading. Then I somehow managed to faceplant a type-6 into a bulkhead, losing about 700,000 credits in 2 seconds, showing that I might need a bit more time on those controls...

Sorry guys but I can fly around as much as I like and he stays behind me, and I'm only on the second combat practice. When he is in front of me it's impossible to get him in my sights long enough to do any damage.

How does this make for a game "everybody" can enjoy? I shouldn't be the one to have to learn and adapt to IT, the bloody thing should be making sure I can sodding play it!!!

Grrrr

Yeah in Premium I hated the combat missions, I made very little money because even if I was winning (slowly) by the time I got the dude down to little hull some other NPC would join me and pop him for me. Which was nice in a way but ****** stole my creds. I try to avoid combat now, but the few times I've tried, it isn't impossible, but it is slow.

That's not a bad thing.

I find having the game a bit too hard a nice change of pace. If I was blasting things away left and right, I would expect to quickly get bored with the combat part of it. But I enjoy the long fights, even the ones where I end up breaking away because it's not going well for me, or dying. Because it's a nice mix of hard, so when I do make that kill, it feels like I accomplished something.

And if you're just starting out, especially with new controls like a joystick or HOTAS, give it time. You will most likely suck at first and get discouraged, but with time it will start to become second nature. Once it starts to be more subconscious reactions, then the game will become a lot more enjoyable.

But ZeeWolf said it best, nothing wrong with evading a fight and living another day either. It all is a success.

It's interesting to see people complaining about the "slow combat" on one hand, while others say it's too fast ;)

No offense to the OP, I think if you give it a bit more practice you'll come to enjoy it - and I can assure you, Elite is mostly perceived as being rather slow-paced.

Elite is definitely not terribly easy though, I'll give you that. It is certainly not impossibile though, and you do NOT have to have awesome twitch reflexes to be good at it and enjoy it.

When fighting are you staying with the blue section of thrust control? This is the most responsive area for manoeuvrability.

Also, learn to use your thruster when turning. Helps no end.

Oh yeah... beware the third mission... it's a ******!

I'm 52, disabled and I manage to play okay.

The best tips I can give are

1: practice practice practice
2: keep your speed within the 'blue' zone on the indicator, that way you'll turn faster
3: put more pips to engine, you'll turn faster
4: trade for a while and then buy some gimballed weapons, it'll be far easier!!

@op

If you tell us what controller you are using, and how you have set it up, we can actually help. If you just vent, you are on your own.

I suspect you have misbound your controls.

keep practising , first few weeks are hard but will get better(otherwise it was just a boring click point game)

what helped me , was looking lots of youtube vids from guys who know their stuff.

little hint , im not 16 anymore too :p

ED just isnt that hard in the grand scheme of things. Manoeuvring and shooting is a way easier than a "proper" military jet sim, and the gameplay pace is way slower than a true twitch game like quake.

Your just going to have to practice and tough it out.

Learning how to dogfight is hard at first, but very rewarding after you get the hang of it.

A HOTAS setup is the best for ED imo.

Keep practicing in the single player missions, they are great for learning how to fight.

Whether you like it or not, some practice to fly the ship IS necessary, it is after all a simulation as much as a game - I am 51, I do not have the reactions of a 15-20yr old, and when I tried the combat scenarios, I thought I would NEVER be able to match the AI. But a few hours of practice and I got through to the last two scenarios.
But even if I hadn't I can find ways to survive and make a living in the game itself.

Now, moving on to the online game, the most important thing to do first is learn how to RUN AWAY! Make money, arm your ship, add better weapons, and then, and only then, start to risk getting into combat.

I have only allowed myself to get into a handful of combats so far. I ran from the first few as they were too quick, and I finally got my first kill today for a 300 bounty.

I am not ashamed of this tactic. Once my ship is armed properly, I will turn & fight more often, when I can take slower aim, and make the shots count. At the same time I will keep improving.

Don't give up, get smart :)

After my 3 month wait for my X52 Pro joystick it finally arrived today.

I had been using my very serviceable MS sidewinder joystick and found the 2nd mission to be very tricky after it seemed to be made harder for premium beta.

After spending 2 hours remapping keys, buttons and hats I went into the scenarios again to try everything out I found that the new joystick made it easier and I got him first time.

Mind you it still was tricky but I felt that I had time to think and work out speed manuvering as well as firing and I am the wrong side of 40.

So lots of practice and perhaps look as your key bindings to see if you can improve on something.

don't underestimate the power of REVERSE :D

i spend most of my combats flying backwards and this seems to confuse the hell out of the targets as they chase me around but my weapons are always locked onto them and my gimbled beam lasers cut them up :D

i love my type-6 :p
